A Group Fitness Instructor at the Richmond Olympic Oval ("Oval") is responsible for designing and delivering dynamic group fitness classes aimed at improving the health, wellness, and fitness levels of Oval members. This role involves leading safe, effective, and engaging sessions while offering expert guidance on proper exercise techniques. The instructor actively promotes a healthy lifestyle, provides ongoing motivation, and fosters a positive and inclusive atmosphere for all participants.

HYROX & Small Group Training Focus

In addition to general group fitness delivery, this role may include specialty coaching (eg. HYROX-style registered small group training programs). These programs emphasize functional strength, conditioning, and race-specific movement patterns delivered in a structured, progressive format. Coaches are expected to lead high-energy, technically sound sessions that balance performance outcomes with inclusive participation.

Key Responsibilities

HYROX / Small Group Training Responsibilities (as assigned)

    • Deliver registered HYROX-style small group training sessions following approved programming framework.
  • Coach race-specific movements, including sled push/pull, wall balls, lunges, farmer's carries, rowing, ski erg, and functional running mechanics.
  • Manage class flow, stations, timing, and transitions for high-intensity, multi-modal sessions.
  • Scale movements appropriately while maintaining session intent, safety, and performance standards.
  • Foster accountability, progression, and community within a consistent small-group cohort.
  • Monitor participants during classes to ensure proper technique, providing modifications to meet different fitness levels and physical limitations.
  • Ensure fitness studio equipment is set up and used correctly, report any issues, and help maintain equipment in good working order.
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive class environment that encourages participant engagement.
  • Enforce safety and injury-prevention procedures; report any accidents and complete incident documentation as required.
  • Provide first-aid treatment as necessary and coordinate additional care when required.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

    • Experience coachingfunctional, high-intensity, or hybrid training formats (e.g., HYROX, CrossFit-style, athletic conditioning, or similar).
  • Comfort coaching barbell lifts, loaded carries, and conditioning intervals safely and effectively in a group environment.
  • Current Training Certification from a recognized body such as ACE, NASM, CFP, CSEP, or equivalent.
  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate from a recognized provider, with CPR-C and AED Certification.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in personal training or group fitness instruction.
  • Strong understanding of human anatomy, exercise physiology, and movement patterns.
  • Successful completion of Criminal Record Check.

Preferred Qualifications and Certifications

    • HYROX Level 1 Certification (strong asset)
  • CrossFit Level 1
  • Personal Training Certification and/or Kinesiology Degree
  • Experience coaching registered small-group or semi-private training programs
  • Competitive or coaching background in endurance, strength, or hybrid sport environments

Skills and Abilities:

    • Ability to coach high-energy, technically demanding sessions while maintaining safety, inclusivity, and coaching presence
  • Ability to deliver engaging, motivational, and effective group fitness instruction.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt instruction to a variety of fitness levels and participant needs.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service and fostering member retention.
  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Compensation range: $ $64.58 as per the Collective Agreement, plus 12% in lieu of benefits (hourly rate is based on qualifications and experience)
