Flow Engineering is seeking an Electrical Designer to join our firm's growing team, based in downtown Vancouver.

Flow Engineering has been providing smart, sustainable and proven mechanical and electrical engineering solutions throughout western Canada for over 10 years. The Flow team is always working on a diverse range of projects that include multi-unit residential developments, mixed-use residential/commercial, fire halls, high-end retail, tenant improvements, hotels and amenity facilities.

Our expectations for this role are:

Site Survey

  • Complete site surveys including all available information to assist with design.
  • Relies on junior staff to assist with straightforward site surveys.

Drafting and Design

  • Designs medium complex systems for projects such as commercial renovations, electrical equipment replacement, motor power connections.
  • Edits and develops standards for specific projects and completes construction documents with sufficient detail to promote success of the project.
  • Draws on experience and proactively addresses potential challenges in project execution.
  • Design is clearly and consistently optimized with emphasis on cost-benefit and sustainability.

Reports, Assessments, and Troubleshooting

  • Collects information with assistance of junior team member and completes full calculations and analysis with the support of a Partner for medium-complexity projects.
  • Able to troubleshoot highly complex system issues/challenges.
  • Completes technical peer reviews (internal or external).

Project Support

  • Prepares construction documentation such as CCNs, SIs, shop drawing reviews and ancillary sketches items for medium complex projects.
  • Completes detailed field reviews and reports.

Communication

  • Communicates clearly with internal team and project manager.
  • Presents numerical data effectively, and can read and interpret complex data.
  • Able to write complete and concise reports such as systems assessments and energy studies.

Technical Knowledge

  • Understands power distribution systems, operation fundamentals of electrical machines, and single phase and three phase systems in Canada.
  • Ability to size cables, overcurrent protection and associated devices.
  • Knowledge of electrical terms / symbols and their application while sizing electrical equipment.
  • Understanding of active, reactive, and apparent powers.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes such as BCBC, VBBL, ASHRAE 90.1.
  • Understanding of single line diagrams, load calculations, fault level calculations an lighting systems.
  • Fluent in AutoCAD and/or Revit and lighting design software.

Teamwork

  • Works effectively and proactively as part of a team.
  • Able to effectively run projects.

Revenue and Project Finances

  • Assesses when tasks being requested by client fall outside of scope from approved proposal.
  • Work with supervisors to approach and secure additional fees.

Qualifications, Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree, C.Tech. or A.Sc.T. in engineering or related field
  • Approximately 2-4 years of directly related experience.
