THE OPPORTUNITY
The Labourer in Drainage performs semi-skilled manual work involving the use of some acquired skills in accomplishing all operations and maintenance tasks assigned in delivering the prescribed programs and services in the Drainage section of the City. Instructions are received orally from a Manager or Foreman and jobs are checked in progress and upon completion to ensure that instructions are properly carried out and meet with predetermined standards. Some independence of actions is expected once employees become familiar with duties. Employees in this position are supervised by the Foreman of Drainage.
This is a temporary full-time position (40 hours per week) from May 4, 2026 to August 28, 2026. This position is part of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).
The hourly rate for this position is:
Step 1 - $22.98
Step 2 - $24.69
Step 3 - $26.42
RESPONSIBILITIES
Manual Labour
Repetitive heavy lifting, shoveling, raking, chainsaw work, weeding, landscaping, pest control.
Equipment Operation
Operating and minor maintenance of light vehicles, water craft and power tools as well as diagnostic underground camera equipment in a safe manner to complete assigned tasks.Operating a dump box truck to haul material.
Documentation
Record keeping of task using our Geographic Information System (GIS) software.
Other Duties
Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
- Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies for staff and contractors.
- Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the "Values, We Live By".
- Complete training and development provided to improve or increase individual competencies related to position responsibilities.
- All employees shall act in a safe manner at all times and will report any unsafe conditions, procedures or acts for the benefit of the City. Continual adherence to the City Safety Policy is mandatory.
- Employee are expected to stay current on WHMIS and other safety-related procedures.
- Perform other job-related duties.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- One (1) year of related experience or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools, and light equipment used in the specific work assignments of this class.
- Basic awareness of occupational hazards and controls applicable to the work.
- Prior experience in operating equipment as required of the position.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Experience using mobile devices such as tablet.
- Basic knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Word.
- Ability to work as a team member and independently with minimal supervision.
Asset Qualifications:
- Underground utility work, ditching, landscaping, knowledge of traffic control.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Class 5 Driver's License.
- Must obtain a satisfactory review of a three-year Driver's Abstract, with a maximum of six demerits.
Working Environment:
- Monday to Friday
- Hours of Work: 8:00am to 4:30pm
- Overtime may be required.
- Requires work outdoors in all conditions, working in an office environment, working in shop work bays and in proximity to active vehicular traffic.
- Exposure to noise levels that may exceed 85 decibels.
