Role Summary:
The Tax Manager will work directly with the Corporate Tax Leader to support the tax function at the firm. This is a very diverse role and will provide greaet experience in sales/commodity tax filings, premium tax filings, corporate income tax filings, trust return filings and other compliance-related tasks. In addition to tax compliance activities, you will also be required to conduct tax research on a variety of tax topics as required by the firm
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Preparing corporate tax provisions.
- Supporting the compilation of corporate tax filings.
- Responsible for the completion of the premium tax returns and sales/commodity tax returns.
- Preparing and reviewing the annual segregated fund and mutual fund trust returns.
- Responsible for oversight of the installment remittance process for all corporate, commodity and premium taxes for the Company and its subsidiaries.
- Responsible for the oversight of the accuracy and completeness of tax accounts. This includes the preparation and/or review of GL reconciliations as well as instalment balance management and reconciliations with CRA/MRQ.
- Reviewing and identifying areas of improvement in policies and procedures to ensure they are consistent and compliant with tax legislation, regulatory requirements and industry practices.
- Acting as a subject matter expert for the annual year-end tax process and supporting tax-related system changes.
- Acting as a technical escalation point for situations relating to tax issues to ensure compliance through accurate and timely reporting to regulatory bodies.
- Providing technical and research support to ensure Empire Life is compliant with federal, provincial, local and applicable foreign and domestic tax laws and regulations.
- Collaborating with other business units and departments on product launches and other special project work and participating in departmental projects as required.

Requirements:
- A university degree in business (or related discipline) from a recognized and accredited educational institution
- 3 to 5+ years of experience with Canadian tax.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
- Completion and or working towards completion of the CPA In-Depth Tax Program (2 or 3 year program).
- Strong proficiency with Excel.
- Knowledge of Canadian corporate tax legislation and experience conducting tax research.
- Key competencies include initiative, judgement, analytical thinking and problem solving and decision making.
- Well-developed organizational skills and great attention to detail/accuracy.
