PART-TIME 911 COMMUNICATOR 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This critical role serves as the vital Communications link between the public needing help and emergency services response. Communicators work independently in a high-stress environment while receiving and evaluating incoming emergency and administrative requests for service.  In a professional, tactful, pleasant, and timely manner, triaging those requests for service: providing guidance and assistance to the public in life-safety situations, and coordinating appropriate responses to high-risk, high-stress operations, prioritizing the safety of all those involved. Monitor calls for service and accurately log details through applicable computer systems as appropriate.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Candidates must have:

Ability to exercise good judgement in public relations when dealing with members of the public Ability and dexterity in handling call-taking functions using computer aided dispatch, and multiline telephone systems Accuracy and speed in keyboarding Ability to identify critical tasks and prioritize same Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a multi-tasking high stress environment Ability to appropriately respond to rapidly changing circumstances and changing technological systems Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) with the ability to relay information clearly to others Ability to deal with difficult clients, de-escalate and diffuse challenging situations and successfully resolve customer issues in a diplomatic, unbiased and professional manner; must relate well to others with courtesy, tact and professionalism, and excellent teamwork skills Proven ability to work effectively independently and as a member of a team Preference will be given to candidates with experience with call/contact center technologies, databases and CAD software or completion of 9-1-1 Emergency and Call Centre Communications Diploma

Education/Experience Required:

Secondary School Graduation DiplomaTraining in C.P.I.C., NICHE and Intergraph CAD software systems, 9-1-1 Emergency Response System, Radio System would be an assetExperience in an office setting; familiarity with the use of office equipment and MS Office computer programs.  Experience with use of phone and radio systems would be beneficial.

Hourly Rate:  $ includes 8% in lieu of benefits)  

This is a new, vacant position with the Peterborough Police Service.

Candidates selected must complete a testing and interview process. Successful applicants will be subject to an in-depth background check as part of the recruitment process.

Note: Candidates must be able to work a variety of shifts, including but not limited to 8, 10 or 12-hour rotating shifts which include days, nights, weekends and statutory/religious holidays.  There will be a five (5) month training component - full-time hours, followed by various  shifts as required once training is complete.
