About the Role

The Use of Force / Defensive Tactics Instructor will be responsible for delivering high quality, compliant training to Horizonor security guards, supervisors, and mobile patrol staff. The successful candidate will help ensure all personnel meet or exceed contractual and legislative training requirements related to use of force, subject control, and defensive tactics.

This role is ideal for an experienced law enforcement or security professional who enjoys teaching, mentoring, and building strong, practical skills in others.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver Use of Force and Defensive Tactics training to Horizonor personnel in classroom and practical environments
• Develop lesson plans, scenario based training, and evaluation tools that align with Ontario legislation and industry best practices
• Provide training in areas such as distance management, personal safety, subject control, handcuffing, and baton use
• Maintain accurate training records, attendance, and assessment results for all participants
• Regularly review and update training content to ensure compliance with current laws, regulations, and client requirements
• Provide written confirmation and documentation of all certifications held, and assist Horizonor with any training related audit or compliance requests
• Coach and mentor participants to ensure safe, professional, and legally defensible use of force practices in the field

Required Qualifications

To meet client and contract requirements, the successful candidate must provide proof that they are a certified and qualified Use of Force Instructor or Defensive Tactics Instructor. Acceptable proof may include, but is not limited to:

• Police Trainer Certification in Use of Force from one of the following:
• Canadian Police College
• Ontario Police College
• A Municipal Police College in Canada
• A recognized Manufacturer's Use of Force or Defensive Tactics Instructor Certificate (for example baton or control tactics manufacturer certification)

In addition, candidates must have:

• Significant practical experience in law enforcement, corrections, security, or a related field where use of force and defensive tactics are applied
• Strong knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, relevant provincial legislation, and case law related to use of force and lawful authority
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to teach mixed experience groups in a clear and engaging manner
• Strong focus on safety, risk management, and professionalism in all training activities
• Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C (or willingness to obtain)
• Ability to travel to training locations within the Greater Toronto Area
• Eligibility to work in Canada and ability to pass any required background checks

Assets

• Previous experience training private security personnel in Ontario
• Experience developing curriculum and scenario based training for large contract deployments
• Previous supervisory or management experience in policing, corrections, or corporate security

Compensation

• Competitive hourly or daily instructor rate, commensurate with experience and certifications
• Flexible scheduling based on project training needs

Pay: $70.00-$85.00 per hour
