OverviewStudent Health and Wellness and Indigenous Initiatives are partnering to hire a full-time counsellor. As part of a multi-disciplinary team and in partnership with Indigenous Initiatives and the Indigenous Student Service Centre, the counsellor will provide professional mental health services, including drop- in counselling, on-going short-term treatment and groups in order to support Indigenous student wellness and academic success.
ResponsibilitiesClinical Practice
- Provide individual single-session drop-in counselling.
- Develop and implement group sessions and/or workshops focused on common presenting needs.
- Assess student needs (including risk assessments) in order to inform provision of care and/or referral.
- Provide mental health services within regulatory body's scope of practice.
- Compliance to regulatory body's code of conduct, college standards and practices and relevant legislation (PHIPA, Regulated Health Professions Act, Health Promotion and Protection Act).
- Practice within an interdisciplinary team (physicians, nurses, health promoters).
- Coordination of care with multiple service providers to ensure holistic approach.
- Provision of follow-up care as needed.
- Work closely with the Office of Indigenous Initiatives and the Indigenous Student Services Centre to stay current on student supports and events, in order to provide culturally safe, relevant, grounded, and holistic options for students.
General Administration
- Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings, clinical roundtables and supervision.
- Participate in quality assurance standards (file audits, case reviews).
- Ensure timely documentation of all care provided.
- Remain current with respect to evidence informed practice.
Indigenous Cultural Knowledge and Competency
- Work closely with the Office of Indigenous Initiatives and the Indigenous Student Services Centre to stay current on student supports and events, in order to provide culturally safe, relevant, grounded, and wholistic options for students.
- Have a deep understanding of cultural worldviews, protocols, and histories of Indigenous peoples that will inform relationships and decision making.
- Attend Indigenous Initiatives team bi-weekly meetings to be aware of the departmental activities.
- Develop and facilitate Indigenous wellness programming.
- Bachelor's degree in social work or related discipline and registered with a regulatory body.
- Extensive experience with individual counselling (especially single session/solution focused/brief therapy and walk-in counselling).
- Experience developing and facilitating group sessions (psycho-educational and therapeutic).
- Working knowledge of relevant legislation (i.e. Personal Health Information and Privacy Act, Family and Children's Services Act, etc.).
- Experience working in a cross-cultural setting with diverse populations such as Indigenous students, along with an awareness of, and/or training in anti-oppressive practices is required.
- The ideal candidate would have lived experience as an Indigenous person or be a member of an equity deserving group.
- The ability to work in a second language would be considered an asset.
