Fractional Chief Operating Officer (15–20 Hours/Week)

About the Opportunity

Our client, a respected nonprofit organization entering a new growth phase, is seeking a Fractional Chief Operating Officer (COO) to strengthen its operational foundation and support strategic expansion. This part-time leadership role is ideal for an experienced operations professional who thrives on building structure, driving efficiency, and ensuring long-term sustainability in mission-driven environments.

Job Summary

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will play a pivotal role in driving operational excellence across the organization. This executive position is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, and collaborating with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to deliver on the organization's mission. The COO will also develop and implement business strategies, optimize processes, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage operational functions to achieve strategic and financial objectives.
  • Oversee business processes, financial management, and governance frameworks.
  • Develop and implement effective business development strategies to drive organizational growth.
  • Oversee project management initiatives, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to quality standards.
  • Foster a culture of leadership and collaboration by mentoring management teams and developing internal capabilities.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and operational efficiency across all departments.
  • Negotiate contracts and agreements with partners, suppliers, and stakeholders to support business objectives.
  • Collaborate with the executive team and board to formulate long-term strategic plans and operational policies.
  • Support fundraising operations, stakeholder relations, and community engagement activities.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in a senior operational leadership role (e.g., COO, Director of Operations, or equivalent).
  • 10+ years of progressive experience overseeing finance, operations, and organizational development.
  • Strong negotiation skills with a track record of successful contract and vendor management.
  • Demonstrated expertise in process improvement methodologies and project management principles.
  • Exceptional leadership abilities with experience managing diverse and cross-functional teams.
  • Solid understanding of business development strategies and market dynamics.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field (MBA preferred).
  • Experience working in or with nonprofit or community-based organizations is an asset.
