About Kennedy House
Kennedy House Youth Services provides shelter, support, and housing services to youth aged 16–24 experiencing homelessness. Working in partnership with the Shelter, Support & Housing Administration (SSHA) and community partners, we offer individualized, trauma-informed, and strength-based care in a safe, supportive environment.
Position Summary
As a Shelter Worker, you will provide direct care, supervision, and support to youth residing in our shelter program. You will work closely with the Shelter Supervisor and team members to promote safety, stability, skill development, and positive behavioral change. This role requires flexibility, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced shelter environment.
Key Responsibilities
Youth Care & Daily Living Support
- Provide therapeutic supervision and support in a residential setting
- Assist youth with daily routines including hygiene, nutrition, rest, and time management
- Prepare and share nutritious meals to promote a family-like environment
- Ensure youth's basic needs are met (food, clothing, shelter)
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized living environment
Behavior Support & Relationship Building
- Build meaningful, therapeutic relationships using trauma-informed approaches
- Model positive behavior and provide consistent, age-appropriate limits
- De-escalate crises and recognize signs of emotional distress or suicidal behavior
- Promote life skills, ethical values, and positive social behaviors
Health, Safety & Security
- Monitor youth physical and emotional health and refer to medical services when needed
- Administer first aid and respond to emergencies
- Maintain a safe environment and ensure proper handling of keys, supplies, and hazardous materials
- Supervise visitors and ensure shelter security protocols are followed
Group & Individual Programming
- Facilitate and participate in group activities and meetings
- Support youth in achieving individualized goals and care plans
- Assist with life skills programming including budgeting, employment readiness, housing support, and community navigation
Documentation & Case Management
- Complete accurate and timely documentation including logs, incident reports, progress notes, and discharge summaries
- Participate in case management meetings and contribute to treatment planning
- Communicate effectively with internal teams and external agencies
Team & Community Engagement
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues across shifts
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and supervision
- Represent Kennedy House positively within the community
Qualifications & Requirements
- Completion of a Social Service Worker Diploma, Youth Worker Diploma, or a Community College Diploma/ University degree with a focus on Social Services and Behavioral Science, 1+ year's experience working with homeless and marginalized youth an asset.
- Current certification in First Aid and CPR C is mandatory within 30 days of hire.
- Current certification in CPI training preferred
- Valid Class G Driver's License is an asset
- Maintain all required immunizations and vaccines.
- Current Police Check and Vulnerable Sector Search Clearance must be current and maintained.
- Knowledge of Toronto Shelter Standards and applicable legislation (Mental Health Act, Child & Family Services Act, Youth Criminal Justice Act, etc.) (asset)
- Demonstrated knowledge of mental health and behavioral needs of youth
- Clinical skills, including experience and ability working with and managing difficult behaviour.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Broad awareness of other cultures, values, identities and perspectives with a demonstrated ability and interest in working with and for diverse populations
- Ability to write legible, clear and concise reports and person-centred plans
- Excellent organization skills and interpersonal skills
- Appropriate attire to be worn at all times and protective equipment available in the program.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $19.00 per hour
