Position Summary :
The Registered Dietitian works collaboratively with all team members and the organization to promote wellness in patients. The Registered Dietitian ensures patients receive adequate nutrients to help improve their medical outcome and provides nutritional information for continued improved health.
- Screening patients for nutritional concerns on designated floors.
- Strong assessment skills in enteral and parenteral nutrition.
- Assessing nutritional needs of individuals and developing and implementing care plans based on the assessment.
- Providing on-going evaluation, monitoring and re-assessment of the patient's nutritional goals until patient goals are met and nutrition services are discontinued.
- Documenting all patient care activities in accordance with hospital and college standards.
- Collaborating with the health care team to establish patient goals. This can be done with individual team members or through patient care meetings.
- Collecting, interpreting and evaluating information on nutrition for clients and for the development of educational material.
- Consulting and communicating with families.
- Membership and participation on hospital committees as appropriate.
- Consulting with outside agencies (i.e. Home and Community Care, Other hospital dietitians etc.) for the purpose of obtaining or transferring patient care information.
- Entering daily workload for direct patient care and non-patient care statistics.
- Attending dietitian council meetings for dissemination and sharing of information on project completion.
- Establishes yearly personal goals and participates in the development of departmental/program goals.
- Participating in journal club and continuing education to maintain a high level of knowledge.
- In servicing staff on nutrition related topics pertinent to the area of nutritional management as time permits or as necessary.
- Educating patients/family on disease specific issues.
- Educating students as needed.
- Demonstrates support of attitudes and behaviours congruent with the SMGH Mission statement.
- Participates in testing and evaluating products for quality, nutritive value and its appropriateness for hospitalized patients.
- Reports to Senior Dietitian for areas of scheduling and workload.
Position Requirements:
- Demonstrated commitment to the values of service, responsible stewardship, community responsiveness and respect
- Current Registration with the College of Dietitians of Ontario
- Accredited 4 year post-secondary degree, or equivalent, with appropriate courses in sciences, human nutrition, administration and humanities
- Active Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate or ability to obtain within 3 months and maintain
- Successful completion of the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination
- Accredited dietetic internship or equivalent supervised practical training
- Member of Dietitians of Canada an asset
- Knowledge related to a variety of disease states (renal, hepatic, malnutrition, gastrointestinal) and their nutritional management
- Good knowledge of enteral and parenteral nutrition
- Effectively works and communicates in a team setting
- Demonstrates ability to respond to controversial nutrition related topics
- Must have a positive work record; a good attendance record
