Senior Habitat Biologist

This posting will be used to staff 1 permanent position.

Our role

As trusted environmental stewards, Department of Environment professionals are committed to a healthy, sustainable and prosperous Yukon. Our people are dedicated to keeping the air, land and water clean, the responsible management of fish and wildlife, and fostering opportunities to connect with nature. We enrich governance through building our relationships with Yukon First Nation and transboundary Indigenous partners and through the application of both science and traditional knowledge in our decision-making.

Your role

As the Senior Habitat Biologist, you'll support our vision and values by providing leadership within the Fish and Wildlife Branch in the development, coordination, and implementation of programs, policies, and plans for the management, inventory, and protection of wildlife habitats and ecosystems in the Yukon.

The incumbent oversees biologists and technicians in the Habitat Unit, including supervising and mentoring staff, preparing and administering budgets, and leading work planning activities. The incumbent will evaluate habitat protection/management programs to ensure long-term conservation of wildlife habitat and to meet branch and departmental objectives.

This position works in collaboration with First Nation governments, boards, and councils and acts as a senior liaison between managers and technical staff on wildlife habitat issues. They are a key member of the Fish and Wildlife Branch's technical teams and represent the Yukon government on committees and panels. Although this senior position works primarily in an office setting, the successful candidate will participate in fieldwork as required.
