Position Summary

This position is responsible for performing welding, brazing, soldering, cutting and fabrication duties related to the maintenance and repair of all City of Regina fleet vehicles and equipment. This position reports to the Heavy Equipment Trades Coordinator. Key Duties & Responsibilities

Repair, installation, erection, alteration or fabrication of a variety of structures and equipment associated with the City's fleet vehicles and mobile equipment. Utilizes arc, acetylene, MIG or other welding equipment to perform welding, cutting, soldering and brazing duties in the construction. Uses welding equipment, band saw, sander, hydraulic press, drill press, pipe threader and various hand tools and equipment to dis-assemble, repair, fabricate or prepare work pieces, and re-assemble Chips and grinds off excess weld, slag, spatter, rough spots and burrs. Prepares work pieces for priming and painting and applies primer and/or paint to fabricated or repaired areas as required. Supervises other apprentices as required. Performs related work as required. Key Qualifications

The knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are obtained through completion of a Journeyperson Certification in the welding trade, coupled with two (2) years journeyperson experience in the welding trade and willing to obtain CWB certification. Knowledge of the science pertaining to metals, alloys, combustion gases, basic electricity and the effects of expansion and shrinkage on metal due to heat. Knowledge of the methods and techniques of welding, brazing, soldering, flame and air/arc cutting using a variety of welding equipment. Knowledge of the Prov. OH&S regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade and ability to work safely with a variety of tools and equipment in the presence of showering sparks, hot metal and noxious fumes. Experience and some knowledge of the work of related trades. (Mechanical repairs and tools required). Ability to understand and visualize from plans, sketches, drawings, specifications and oral instructions, the relationships and arrangement of parts and assemblies to be joined; ability to discern pertinent details of bead sizes, penetration, evenness in weld, differences in shape, dimensions and alignment. Ability to recognize colour-coded metals, welding rods and ferrous metals by grinder-spark tests, flame temperature and colour differences between hot and molten metal at time of bonding or fusing. Ability to perform medium to heavy work requiring lifting of materials, tools and equipment weighing up to fifty pounds; capacity to work in awkward positions such as performing overhead welds. Ability to move and manipulate work pieces, controls, electrodes, filler rod, etc., quickly and accurately during set up, welding, brazing and cutting operations. Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions, maintain accurate records on labour and materials. Ability to supervise apprentices as assigned. Working/Other Conditions

Must possess a valid First Aid Certificate. Must provide a basic set of hand tools for the trade. Must possess a valid drivers license and be able to complete training and successfully qualify for a Class 3A drivers license. The employee will be required to work in a variety of inclement weather conditions outside of the welding facility throughout various areas of the City of Regina Shift work may be required. Be required to work in Fleet Maintenance functional areas other than in the Welding Shop as necessary

Additional Requirements: Successful candidates may be required to provide a satisfactory criminal record check per the City of Regina's Criminal Record Check Policy. Proof of education is required. Additional assessments may be conducted to evaluate competencies, skills, and knowledge.
