Reporting to: Lands and Stewardship Director
The Lax Kw'alaams Lands, Resources and Stewardship Department has an exciting and immediate opening for a Full-Time Cultural Heritage Coordinator. As a key member of the team, this role is responsible for providing advocacy and representation, collaboration and engagement, cultural stewardship and community engagement, referral response, education, research and program development to protect and celebrate Lax Kw'alaams culture and heritage, including implementation of ancestral polices and procedures.
Responsibilities:
General
- Identification and creation of opportunities to guide inclusion of Lax Kw'alaams cultural heritage programs into work of consulting archaeologists within Lax Kw'alaams territory; including fieldwork, site visits, research and decision making
- Provide educational opportunities and guidance to government and industry proponents regarding Lax Kw'alaams cultural heritage policies and programs
- Cultural Heritage committee representative for Lands, Resources and Stewardship
- Liaise and collaborate as required with cultural heritage experts and educational institutions.
- Participate in the review and data management of organization archived traditional use information and the collection of new cultural heritage data, while assisting the Lands, Resources and Stewardship GIS Analyst with updating the Lax Kw'alaams global TUS GIS database
- Identify and implement on the territory traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and traditional land use studies (TLUS)
- Conduct reviews, assessments, and reports on forestry referrals, forestry-related permit applications, and other forestry management matters and processes
- Conduct field work and reconnaissance programs for archaeology and natural resource management activities in Lax Kw'alaams traditional territory
- Support major project reviews within the Environmental Assessment Process, in addition to small proposed development including archaeological permitting
- Develop Lax Kw'alaams Cultural Heritage Plan; existing policy review and development with identification of short and long-term areas of focus
- Develop a long-term strategy to repatriate remains and artifacts, and to support the establishment of a cultural heritage repository
- Proposal writing to support cultural heritage programs and projects of importance to Lax Kw'alaams
- Provide interdepartmental support as required from time to time, such as the Lax Kw'alaams Fisheries Department
Note: Perform all other duties within the scope of the position and as requested by the Lands and Stewardship Director
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Degree or equivalent education and experience, in First Nations Studies, First Nations Stewardship, History, Archeology, Anthropology or Heritage Management
Experience
- 1 Year of experience as a Cultural Heritage Coordinator or related field
Sound knowledge of First Nations Heritage and Culture
- Understanding of Provincial and Federal regulatory policies and processes
- Ability to undertake field work under varying terrain and weather conditions
- Experience and knowledge in the use and application of GIS and GPS systems
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including a strong ability in report writing, including excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as be a cooperative and contributing member in a team environment
- Self-motivation with the capability to balance competing priorities and manage ambiguous situations
Competency
- Interpersonal skills – must have the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of interests, including regulators, proponents, other First Nations and community members
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including a strong ability in report writing.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as be a cooperative and contributing member in a team environment
- Preference may be given to candidates with familiarity of Provincial and Federal Heritage legislation acts and demonstrated skills and experience in professional cultural resources management report writing and mapping
- Knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Access & Excel) and proficient data management skills
- Basic knowledge of Tsimshian culture and practices
- Previous experience working for First Nation's an asset

Classification/Pay Scale
- As per the Canadian Union of Public Employees' Local 2365 Collective Agreement
- $35 – $40/hour
