About the job

In this job, you will:

  • Analyze geological samples using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy
  • Prepare and weigh samples for testing
  • Maintain and care for platinum sample prep materials
  • Apply calibration and quality control standards to ensure accurate data
  • Set priorities and manage sample schedules
  • Archive and dispose of samples responsibly
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on instruments

Note: On-the-job training will be provided to meet Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and Ontario Ministry of Labour requirements for operating X-ray fluorescence instruments and radiation detection badges.

What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements

You have:

  • A degree in, earth sciences, geology, chemistry or a related discipline from a recognized university; or a diploma in chemical technology from an accredited college or technical institute; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Technical knowledge

You:

  • understand the basic fundamentals of X-Ray spectroscopy theory and practice applied to the analysis of geological and related materials by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF).
  • can operate and maintain XRF equipment, Loss of Ignition (LOI) and sample preparation instrumentation and equipment.
  • have full understanding of the use and application of quality assurance and quality control procedures and practices.
  • have an understanding of ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 17025:2005.
Analytical and evaluation skills:

You:

  • have analytical skills and logic when operating X-Ray Fluorescence instrumentation.
  • can determine the appropriate standard or alternative testing procedure.
  • can diagnose and resolve errors in analytical data.
  • use your analytical and evaluation skills, you can evaluate and improve the quality of results achieved.
  • can effectively record and report analytical data.
  • are able to prepare documentation such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical reports.
Organizational and time-management skills:

You can:

  • prioritize tasks and manage competing deadlines
  • Maintain strong attention to detail while handling multiple responsibilities
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan, organize, and execute projects efficiently
  • Use tools and strategies to stay organized and meet timelines consistently
Interpersonal Skills

You have:

  • the ability to build positive relationships, foster teamwork, and communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
Computer skills

You have:

  • knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets.
  • experience using custom laboratory instrument and data processing programs.
