Join Alberta Environment and Protected Areas as the Director, Land and Environmental Planning – North, where you'll lead transformative planning initiatives that balance environmental, economic, and social priorities across Alberta's northern regions.

Success in this role requires collaborative leadership and the ability to adapt quickly in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The Director builds strong relationships across the ministry, other departments, and key stakeholders, to advance complex initiatives. By championing continuous improvement and mentoring staff, the Director strengthens organizational capacity and ensures processes are efficient, transparent, and responsive to changing priorities.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of subregional integrated resource management plans.
  • Build and guide multi-disciplinary planning teams across ministries and stakeholder groups.
  • Facilitate meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities, municipalities, industry, and environmental organizations.
  • Champion cumulative effects management and integrated planning principles as outlined in Alberta's Integrated Resource Management System (IRMS).
  • Oversee transition of strategic plans into operational frameworks with measurable outcomes.
  • Represent Alberta Environment and Protected Areas and the Government of Alberta on intergovernmental committees and taskforces.
  • Identify policy gaps and legislative opportunities to enhance planning effectiveness.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • A four (4)-year university degree in natural resource planning or management, environmental sciences, geography, political science, economics, or a related field.
  • Minimum Six (6) years of progressively related experience in environmental planning, project management, or ecosystem sustainability.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience as described below may also be considered.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Assets:

  • Experience in cumulative effects management and integrated resource planning.
  • Certification in project management or facilitation.
  • Experience leading cross-ministry or intergovernmental initiatives.
  • Knowledge of Alberta's Integrated Resource Management System (IRMS) and its application in land use planning.

This position is a full-time opportunity and is located in Edmonton.

This position works Monday to Friday, 8:15 AM-4:30 PM, 36.25 hours a week.
