Participants in the SPEP program will gain relevant work experience under the supervision of an appointed preceptor for a minimum of 140 clinical hours. Practice hours may be extended, depending on individual learning needs. Applicants will demonstrate nursing knowledge, skill and judgment and exhibit an understanding of the CNO practice standards in keeping with the Hamilton Health Sciences policies and standards. Participants will be required to complete a learning plan as well as mid-term and final evaluations. All CNO standards must be met to be successful in the program.
• Practices under the direct or indirect supervision of the RN or RPN (A RN applicant must be supervised by a RN or NP and a RPN applicant can be supervised by a RPN or RN) perform patient assessments, safe medication administration, assist patients with ADLs, documentation of patient care
• Works in collaboration with their preceptor to ensure they have the necessary knowledge, skill and judgment to provide safe and efficient patient care
• Understands their role and scope, will seek assistance and support if requiring assistance to complete duties
• As an active member of the inter-professional team, demonstrates safe patient care while maintaining the CNO practice standards and guidelines
• Exhibits critical thinking skills, organizational skills, time management and ability to problem solve and make decisions that positively impact patient care
• Performs all procedures implementing infection control policies and the proper use of PPE as needed
• Understands Hamilton Health Sciences privacy policy and maintains confidentiality
• Provides patient centered care aligning with Hamilton Health Sciences Mission and Values

The HHS SPEP program provides paid placements for candidates who have received a letter of eligibility (SPEP) from the CNO. SPEP participants will be placed with a preceptor at one of the five Hamilton Health Sciences sites. Hamilton Health Sciences is currently offering SPEP positions in the following areas:

• Hematology, Oncology, Rehabilitation, Periop
• Hamilton General Hospital\: Med/Surg, Neuro/Stroke, Rehab, Cardiology,
• McMaster Children's Hospital\: Pediatrics, Critical Care, Ambulatory Clinics, NICU, Emergency Department, Periop
• St. Peter's Hospital\: Complex Care, Rehabilitation, Palliative Care
• West Lincoln\: Medicine, Periop, Obstetrics, Emergency Department
