As a Groundman 1 (Seasonal), you will support the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal infrastructure throughout the City of Calgary. This hands-on role operates in active roadway environments and plays a critical part in ensuring the safety of crew members, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Primary duties include:
- Perform labour duties supporting the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal infrastructure under the direction of a Foreman or Signal Technician.
- Assist with roadway work including installation of loop detectors, puck sensors, conduit, and related components.
- Set up, maintain, and remove lane closures, signage, cones, and barricades in accordance with approved traffic control plans.
- Safely use hand and power tools such as saws, grinders, pneumatic drills, and jackhammers.
- Operate authorized work vehicles and equipment and communicate effectively with team members to coordinate tasks.
- Follow all safety policies and procedures, maintain situational awareness, identify and report hazards, wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and maintain a professional presence while working in public areas.
Qualifications
- At least 2 years of related experience; or 1 year of experience as a Signals Groundman 1.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or pending charges is required.
- A valid Class 3 with Q Endorsement is considered an asset.
- A High School diploma or equivalency (for example: General Educational Development [GED]) is considered an asset.
- Preference may be given to applicants with previous signals experience.
- Success in this position requires excellent communication skills and initiative; the ability to use caution and exercise sound judgement with regards to safety and work site hazards.
- Successful applicants must successfully complete all City of Calgary training provided.
Working Conditions: Employees will be required to work in all types of weather (rain, snow, heat or extreme cold) with heavy lifting and physical activity involved.
Pre-employment Requirements
- A security clearance will be conducted.
- Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
