Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Policy and Program Development, the Policy Analyst is responsible for supporting and coordinating the development and implementation of multiple transportation engagement and policy initiatives that will impact the long-term and future direction of the transportation system in Alberta. This includes developing program policies and transportation safety programs and conducting legislative and regulatory reviews. 

Responsibilities Include: 

  • Conducts policy and data analysis to support transportation initiatives, major studies, and departmental decision making. 
  • Prepares clear advisory notes, reports, and recommendations based on quantitative and qualitative research. 
  • Monitors emerging trends, industry developments, and external information sources to inform policy direction. 
  • Engages and collaborates with stakeholders, industry partners, consultants, and other government bodies. 
  • Participates in internal and external meetings, workshops, and cross-government initiatives. 
  • Reviews existing policies and identifies opportunities to improve programs, strategies, and regulatory approaches. 
  • Builds and maintains networks to gather timely information and support evidence based policy development.

Qualifications

Required:  

  • University degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Administration or related field, PLUS 2 years related experience or equivalent as described.

Equivalency:

  • Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.


For Example: 

  • Related 1 year certificate PLUS a minimum 7 years of experience.
  • Related 2-year diploma PLUS a minimum 6 years of experience.
  • Related minimum 8 years of experience .

Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification. 

The successful candidate MUST also have: 

  • Highly proficient in using Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of transportation legislation, regulation, and policy.
  • Strong understanding of the theory and practice of policy analysis, including complex, policy and program development process, policy planning and options development and decision-making processes within government.
  • Understanding of theory and practice of problem-solving and analytical techniques..
  • Strong understanding of the theory and practice of engagement/consultation, including stakeholder engagement development process, engagement planning, analyzing results, and decision-making processes within government.

Assets: 

  • Current knowledge of the transportation system in Alberta, as well as familiarity with issues affecting drivers and stakeholders.
  • Experience working on policy packages for Minister and Cabinet approval.
  • Experience working with related transportation industry representatives.
  • Experience working with key ministry partners including SARTR, PSES, Justice and Technology and Innovation.
  • Experience in supporting facilitated discussions on complex issues with various stakeholders.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in survey tools, such as Opinio or SurveyMonkey.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Professional tools, including Adobe Acrobat Pro.
