Position: Physician Assistant (Full Time and Part Time)

Reporting to: Executive Director

Position Overview

The Don Mills Family Health Team (DMFHT) provides primary health care services, including health promotion, disease prevention, and chronic disease management, to the population within the DMFHT catchment area. The FHT comprises an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals working in a collaborative model of care.

The Physician Assistant (PA) plays an integral role in supporting the care of patients at the Don Mills Family Health Team and contributes to achieving the organization's vision and mission. The role requires a strong understanding of primary care within the PA scope of practice and the ability to function effectively in a team-based environment.

Job Responsibilities

· Promote and maintain patient health by providing medical services under the supervision of each patient's rostered physician.

· Contribute to physician efficiency by identifying short-term and long-range patient care needs.

· Recommend options and appropriate courses of action for patient care, implement physician directives.

· Assess patient health by interviewing patients and performing physical examinations, including obtaining, updating, and reviewing medical histories.

· Identify abnormal conditions by administering or ordering diagnostic tests (e.g., X-rays, laboratory studies) and interpreting results.

· Document patient care services in patient charts and departmental records.

· Perform therapeutic procedures such as administering injections and immunizations, suturing, and managing wounds and infections.

· Instruct and counsel patients regarding normal growth and development, and provide counselling for emotional or psychosocial concerns related to daily living.

· Support continuity of care by developing and implementing patient-management plans.

· Maintain a safe and clean working environment by adhering to established procedures, rules, and regulations.

· Protect patients and staff by following infection-control policies and protocols.

· Comply with federal, provincial, and local legal and professional requirements by reviewing relevant legislation, anticipating changes, ensuring adherence, and advising management on necessary actions.

· Contribute to the development of the health care team by providing information, education, and opportunities for experiential growth.

Qualifications and Requirements

· Education: Completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited Physician Assistant education program.

· Registration: PA registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).

· Patient Assessment: Ability to conduct comprehensive interviews, take medical histories, and perform physical examinations.

· Diagnosis and Treatment: Formulate diagnoses and treatment plans in collaboration with supervising physicians.

· Diagnostics: Order and interpret diagnostic tests, including lab work, X-rays, CT scans, and ultrasounds.

· Procedures: Perform minor procedures and interventions such as suturing, administering injections, applying casts, and assisting in surgery.

· Medication Management: Prescribe medications under the guidance of a supervising physician (where permitted).

· Communication: Effectively communicate complex medical information to patients and collaborate with interprofessional health care teams.

· Professionalism: Demonstrate strong analytical ability, problem-solving skills, compassion, and emotional stability, especially in fast-paced or high-stress environments.

· Documentation: Maintain accurate, concise, and confidential medical documentation.

· Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) designation is an asset.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $41.00-$42.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30 – 37.5 per week
