Job Summary
The Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is seeking a part-time research assistant to join a dynamic, interdisciplinary research program focused on applying artificial intelligence to psychiatry and supportive cancer care.

The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with BC Cancer and UBC Mood Disorders Centre. They will contribute to the technical development of research and clinical tools that use natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning to improve the psychosocial health of patients and enhance care provided by clinicians.

Organizational Status
The Research Assistant receives direct direction and reports to the Principal Investigator and my also receive direction from the Supportive Care Program Medical Director and the lab's NLP Data Scientist. The Research Assistant will also interact with other lab members, research assistants, trainees, and members of other departments at UBC and BC Cancer.

Work Performed
- Collect and maintain a list of resources for patients with cancer.

- Interact with and test an AI-powered navigation assistant as directed by the PI and lab members.

- May assist with organizing lab meetings and schedules for other research assistants in the lab.

- Assists with updating materials used in amendment requests, annual renewals, and initial applications for the UBC Research Ethic Boards.

- Support grant writing and submission which includes editing and proofreading sections, under direct supervision.

- Assists with manuscript and presentation preparation.
- Completes other tasks appropriate to the classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
 

The Research Assistant receives direction and reports to the Principal Investigator. Errors in accuracy, judgement, tact and poor decisions could delay the timely completion of the projects or be damaging to the reputation, for the PI, the Department, Faculty, UBC and other institutions affiliated with the project(s). The Principal Investigator will help with quality assurance and review work to mitigate these risks.

Supervision Received
Works under supervision and receives detailed instructions on assignments. Work is reviewed in terms of completeness, accuracy and timeliness. 

 

Supervision Given
May provide guidance to volunteers or students affiliated with the lab.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a research setting, especially in cancer care.

• Computer experience, especially with Adobe Products, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Slack.

• Experience writing academic manuscripts and/or grants.

• Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.

• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

• Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.

• Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities and to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
