'Summary'

The Tenant Support Worker is responsible for supporting Indigenous elders, families and single adults in maintaining successful tenancies at Dze L K'ant housing properties. This position helps residents build connections to community resources, develop tenancy skills, and navigate challenges that may arise in independent living. The Tenant Support Worker creates a welcoming, culturally safe environment where tenants can thrive, while working collaboratively with property management to ensure smooth operations and positive resident experiences. This position serves as a bridge between tenants and available community supports, fostering self-sufficiency while respecting the independence and dignity of residents. The worker will assist in creating a sense of community with the building, offering activities, resources and communications to strengthen wellbeing and connection between staff and tenants.

The role requires cultural humility, excellent relationship-building skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. This position's schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, with occasional flexibility required for urgent tenant concerns.

'Responsibilities'

  • Build and maintain positive, trusting relationships with tenants, providing culturally

appropriate support and assistance

  • Assist in coordinating tenant orientation for new move-ins, ensuring residents

understand their rights, responsibilities, and available supports

  • Conduct regular check-ins with residents and provide early intervention support

  • Assist tenants in developing and maintaining successful tenancy skills, including

household management, budgeting, and conflict resolution

  • Provide information, referrals, and assistance to help residents access community

resources including income assistance, health services, cultural programs, and

educational opportunities

  • Assist residents with activities of daily living on a needs basis

  • Support tenants in navigating systems and advocating for their needs with service

providers, government agencies, and other organizations

Community Building and Engagement

  • Organize and facilitate community-building activities and cultural programming that

promote resident connection and wellbeing

  • Develop and maintain relationships with Friendship Centre programming and other

local service providers/community partners

  • Identify opportunities to bring relevant programming and services to residents,

particularly programs designed for Indigenous families and elders

  • Support the development of peer support networks and mutual aid among residents

  • Participate in community events and represent Dze L K'ant Housing Society in the

broader community

Crisis Response and Problem-Solving

  • Respond to tenant concerns and conflicts in a timely, respectful, and solution-focused

manner

  • Support the Housing Manager in providing crisis intervention and emotional support

when residents face challenges or emergencies

  • Support the Housing Manager in the mediation of disputes between residents, helping

parties find mutually acceptable solutions

  • Assist residents experiencing difficulties related to rent payment, utility management,

or other housing-related issues by making correct referrals and connections

  • Connect residents with appropriate emergency services and supports when needed

  • Work collaboratively with property management team to address tenancy issues while

maintaining supportive relationships with residents

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with the Housing Program Manager and Maintenance Manager to

coordinate seamless service delivery

  • Communicate effectively with residents regarding housing policies, maintenance

schedules, and community updates

  • Serve as a liaison between tenants and property management, facilitating clear

communication and mutual understanding

  • Maintain respectful working relationships with external service providers, cultural

organizations, and community agencies

  • Participate in regular team meetings and contribute to program planning and

improvement

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate, confidential records of tenant interactions, support plans, and

service referrals

  • Document substantive interactions with residents for continuity of care and program

evaluation

  • Prepare reports on program activities and outcomes as required

  • Ensure documentation complies with privacy legislation and organizational policies

  • Track and report on community partnerships and resource utilization

  • 'Qualifications'
  • • Diploma or certificate in Social Services, Community Support, Indigenous Studies, or a
  • related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant lived/work
  • experience
  • • Minimum one year of experience working with Indigenous communities or families in a
  • support capacity
  • • Understanding of Indigenous cultural safety principles and trauma-informed practices
  • • Knowledge of community resources and social services available in the Smithers area
  • • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and
  • rapport with diverse individuals
  • • Demonstrated ability to maintain professional boundaries while providing
  • compassionate support
  • • Basic computer skills including email, word processing, and database management
  • • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle
  • • Successful completion and maintenance of a Criminal Record Check as required

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $28.00-$30.00 per hour
