The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced freelance copyeditor to join our editorial team. The ideal candidate has a strong background in medical/academic editing and a meticulous eye for detail. This role focuses on copyediting, line editing, and mechanical editing of manuscripts, ensuring adherence to AMA style and journal-specific guidelines. Accuracy in checking data against text and tables/figures is essential.
Responsibilities
- Perform copyediting and line editing of manuscripts, ensuring clarity, consistency, and accuracy.
- Apply AMA Manual of Style and journal-specific style requirements rigorously.
- Conduct mechanical editing, including grammar, punctuation, spelling, and formatting, following the in-house style manual.
- Verify data consistency between text, tables, figures, and references.
- Collaborate with the editorial team to maintain high standards of publication quality.
- Manage workflow efficiently to meet deadlines, preferably copyediting 1-2 manuscripts per week.
Qualifications
The successful candidate for the role will bring the following skills and experiences:
- Minimum 3–5 years of professional copyediting experience
in medical or scientific publishing.
- Demonstrated expertise in AMA style and ability to adapt to house styles.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to check data against text accurately.
- Excellent command of English grammar and usage.
- Experience with manuscript submission and peer-review management software (eg, ScholarOne, Editorial Manager) is an asset.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines consistently.
