Overview:

We are looking for a Power BI Administrator to join our Data Platform Operations team. This is a role requiring focused expertise in core administration activities and platform governance. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining a stable, secure, and optimized Power BI environment while proactively identifying and addressing performance or capacity issues. The ideal candidate should also be capable of identifying cost-saving opportunities within the platform and recommending appropriate actions to management, ensuring both operational efficiency and financial stewardship.

They must bring a creative, solutions-oriented mindset to Power BI administration—particularly when it comes to scaling operations. In a high-volume, complex enterprise environment, routine manual execution is impractical. We need someone who can think critically, identify inefficiencies, and design smart automation through custom scripts to streamline repetitive admin tasks. Their ability to innovate under operational constraints will directly impact platform efficiency and user satisfaction.

Power BI Tenant Administration:

• Monitor and manage Power BI capacity, performance, and resource utilization across the enterprise.
• Implement and enforce platform governance policies including workspace and dataset management.
• Analyze control unit (CU) usage and system logs to identify anomalies, bottlenecks, and optimization opportunities.
• Create and maintain custom reports and dashboards using SQL, REST APIs, and shell scripts for proactive monitoring and operational insights.
• Design and execute bulk actions and administrative tasks via custom scripting and automation.
• Assess capacity overload situations and recommend mitigation steps or follow-up actions to management.
• Support Azure DevOps-based Power BI deployments and troubleshoot any failures in the deployment pipeline.

User Management & Support:

• Create and manage user roles, permissions, and group assignments within the Power BI tenant to align with organizational security policies.
• Provide end-user support, including troubleshooting issues, managing refresh schedules, and resolving data access queries.
• Coordinate with IT and business stakeholders to onboard and offboard users while ensuring proper data access and role assignments.

Power BI Operations & Optimization:

• Monitor Power BI service health and alerts, and respond to incidents that may impact data access, refreshes, or performance.
• Collaborate with business teams to ensure the successful implementation and support of Power BI reporting solutions.
• Optimize report and dataset performance through best practices in data modeling, incremental refresh, and proper use of Power Query.
• Maintain up-to-date records of licenses, user roles, and permissions to support audits and compliance reviews.

Collaboration & Governance:

• Lead the development of comprehensive user guide documentation for Power BI tenant guidelines, workspace management policies, and data stewardship practices.
• Create and maintain a FAQ knowledge base to support the Enterprise BI user community, ensuring easy access to common solutions and best practices.
• Collaborate with data engineers, architects, and business analysts to document internal technical details and workflows, ensuring clear communication and alignment with governance standards.
• Facilitate user training workshops to drive Power BI adoption and provide support, ensuring users are equipped with best practices for effective report development and usage.
• Continuously update documentation and training materials based on feedback, changes in technology, or evolving business needs.

Qualifications:

• 3 to 5 years of experience in Power BI administration, data governance, or related roles.
• Strong hands-on experience with Power BI administration in a large-scale, enterprise environment.
• Proficiency in writing SQL queries and using REST APIs to interact with Power BI services and logs.
• Scripting experience in PowerShell or other shell scripting languages for automation and bulk actions.
• Deep understanding of Power BI governance, capacity management, and operational best practices.
• Familiarity with Azure DevOps pipelines and the ability to diagnose and resolve deployment issues.
• Familiarity with data integration concepts, data modeling, and ETL processes.
• Knowledge of cloud computing platforms, especially Microsoft Azure and its data services.
• Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively across teams in a dynamic environment.
• Relevant certifications in Power BI and Azure are a plus.

Additional Notes:

This is a hands-on admin role. We are not seeking generalists or hybrid profiles—success in this position requires focused expertise in Power BI administration to ensure platform stability and reliability. Given the critical nature of the role, it is not one where trial and error is an acceptable approach.

Job Type: Fixed term contract

Contract length: 12 months

Pay: $17.75-$60.00 per hour
