Department:
Institute for Studies in Trans-Disciplinary Engineering Education and Practice
Campus:
St. George (Downtown Toronto)
Description
The Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education and Practice (ISTEP) in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (FASE) at the University of Toronto invites applications for up to two full-time teaching stream appointments, specializing
in the integration and delivery of
communication instruction within the engineering curriculum. These appointments will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.
While both positions will work to integrate communication instruction into the engineering curriculum, one will focus on supporting second language learners, including developing and delivering language diagnostics, ongoing curricular language support, as well as co-curricular programs for professional language development.
Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in engineering or technical communication or a related area, such as English, Applied Linguistics, Rhetoric, Engineering Education or Engineering, by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, and must have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths. Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree-granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.
The applicant will have had experience successfully integrating the instruction of written, oral, and visual communication principles within STEM (and especially engineering/engineering design) related projects, courses, and curricula, alongside a strong foundation in engineering communication theory and pedagogy. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate commitment to Communication-Integrated Teaching and Learning or Writing in the Disciplines pedagogy, an interest in teaching-related scholarly activities, and an engagement with relevant professional communities of practice.
Experience designing and delivering instruction to help English professional language development for multilingual students will be considered an asset. Experience in graduate level writing and communication instruction, particularly in genres such as proposals, research articles, and theses would also be beneficial to the application. Additionally, experience in the integration of additional transdisciplinary competencies such as team skills, leadership, ethics and equity, lifelong learning, and other CEAB graduate attributes is preferred. Finally, experience in teaching communication skills to mature technology professionals is also an asset.
The successful applicant will teach in multiple courses and programs, contributing to the Engineering Communication Program's and ISTEP's mandate to integrate communication across FASE's core undergraduate curricula.
Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below), and strong letters of reference.
Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) are essential to academic excellence and to the success of our department. Evidence of a commitment to EDI will be demonstrated by a statement describing views, experiences and/or plans furthering EDI via pedagogy, outreach, mentorship of students or co-workers, and/or other activities.
Salary Is Commensurate With Qualifications And Experience.
