About Mishka Social Services
Mishka Social Services is a community-based organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families through a range of social programs. Our mission is to promote well-being, equity, and empowerment by providing accessible support services including mental health resources, family outreach, housing support, and youth programs.
We are currently seeking a motivated and compassionate Volunteer Social Service Worker who is looking to gain hands-on experience in the field while contributing to meaningful community-based work.
About the Program
The Senior Wellness Program at Mishka Social Services supports immigrant, newcomer, and refugee seniors in the Hamilton community. Through friendly visiting, friendly calling, and community education, we foster connection, learning, and empowerment for older adults who may be experiencing isolation.
Role Overview
As a Senior Wellness Volunteer, you will be matched with a local senior to provide meaningful social interaction and companionship. Volunteers offer regular weekly or biweekly visits or calls that can include:
- Friendly conversation
- Playing card or board games
- Going for walks
- Running light errands together
- Exploring local sites or community events
- Sharing stories, laughter, and cultural exchange
Responsibilities
- Commit to regular visits or calls (1–2 hours weekly or biweekly)
- Build trusting, respectful relationships with seniors from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Encourage social engagement and help reduce isolation
- Respect program guidelines regarding confidentiality, safety, and boundaries
- Maintain communication with program staff and report any concerns
Qualifications
- Friendly, patient, and reliable
- Strong listening and communication skills
- Comfortable engaging with seniors from diverse cultures, languages, and life experiences
- Ability to commit to a consistent volunteer schedule
- Previous experience with seniors is an asset but not required
