Your opportunity:

This position is in the lab of Professor Amy Kirkham in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education and the 'Cardiometabolic, Oncology, Diet and Exercise in Women' (CODE-W) research centre (in development). The lab and research centre (co-led by Dr. Jenna Gillen) characterize the intersection of cancer, cardiovascular, and metabolic disease in women and develop lifestyle interventions (exercise, diet, rehabilitation, etc) to prevent or ameliorate these conditions. The lab and research centre take a comprehensive and holistic assessment approach, encompassing the collection and analysis of biological samples, real-time biosensors (e.g., continuous glucose monitors, physical activity trackers), cardiopulmonary exercise testing, state-of-the-art magnetic resonance and ultrasound imaging (primarily cardiac and vascular), and patient-reported and clinical outcomes.

The Research Coordinator's primary purpose is to be responsible for the coordination of a 2-site clinical trial called TEST (Time-restricted Eating in Survivors Trial). TEST will enroll 150 older breast cancer survivors in Toronto and Edmonton who will be randomly assigned to follow time-restricted eating with counselling to increase protein intake or to receive standard healthy eating education delivered via one-on-one study calls. The primary outcome in the trial is Framingham cardiovascular risk with secondary outcomes of physical and cognitive function. Assessments conducted include the collection of blood, ultrasound of brain and peripheral blood vessels, MRI of the brain, liver, viscera, and skeletal muscles, objective cognitive function and physical function tests. The secondary purpose of the position is for the maintenance of research-related activities in the lab, including coordination of lab activities, other ongoing studies, and administration. The incumbent may support other research projects by providing knowledge, skills, and on-the-job training to others. The role will also include delivery of research interventions including nutrition and/or exercise (depending on qualifications) to participants by following standardized protocols and tracking and supporting their compliance to the intervention.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Proofing and posting adverts to recruit potential applicants
  • Scheduling study participants, study personnel, and equipment/space for assessments
  • Maintaining an accurate and up-to-date database of participant accrual and study progress
  • Conducting routine measurements and assessments for testing of participants
  • Following rules and procedural instructions when administering research interventions (diet and exercise)
  • Checking that projects adhere to research ethics, privacy and good clinical practice requirements
  • Liaising (both oral and email) with various stakeholders (participants, the study PI, the Edmonton site lead, Dr. Carla Prado, co-investigators, and lab members) to foster collaboration in a professional manner
  • Collecting and submitting expense reimbursement claims or other invoices

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology, Physical Education, Nutrition Sciences, Nursing, Physiology, Human Biology, or other closely related field that involves application to humans or an equivalent combination of related education and experience. Master's degree considered an asset
  • Minimum of two years of experience in research, project management, or administrative work. Time spent in graduate school counts toward this experience. If no research experience, applicants are expected to clearly outline how their other work experience has appropriately prepared them for the responsibilities of the position
  • Excellent oral and written communication, teamwork, customer service, and interpersonal skills
  • An ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail
  • High computer proficiency
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and to multitask while remaining organized and diligent

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Applicants with exercise professional designations such as Registered Kinesiologist or CSEP CEP/CPT or registered dietitian credentials will be given special consideration
  • Experience with human physiological assessments (including use of metabolic carts for exercise testing) and clinical assessments (e.g., blood pressure) would be considered strong assets
