Shift: Monday to Friday; 8:00am-5:00pm

SUMMARY

The Director, Fleet Maintenance is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of Erb's three maintenance shops located in Baden - Truck, Trailer, and Reefer. Reporting to and working in alignment with the Vice President, Fleet Maintenance, this role ensures the safe, efficient, and cost-effective maintenance of the fleet while supporting company-wide asset management goals. The Director provides hands-on leadership to shop managers, drives operational performance, ensures regulatory compliance, and champions continuous improvement across all Baden maintenance operations.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Oversight

  • Provide leadership and direction to the Trailer Shop Manager, Reefer Shop Manager, and Truck Shop Manager, fostering teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and implement maintenance strategies that align with organizational goals and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee staffing, training, and performance management for all maintenance teams.

Fleet Maintenance Operations

  • Ensure all fleet maintenance activities within the Baden shops are completed efficiently, on schedule, and in compliance with Erb Group standards, safety requirements, and regulatory obligations.
  • Direct the execution and optimization of preventive maintenance programs to maximize equipment uptime and reliability.
  • Oversee warranty administration, vendor relationships, and parts procurement for Baden operations.
  • Lead operational initiatives that reduce costs while enhancing quality and productivity across all three shops.

Budgeting & Cost Control

  • Develop and manage the annual Baden maintenance budget, including labor, parts, tooling, and capital spend.
  • Track, analyze, and report KPIs related to fleet performance, maintenance costs, team productivity, and downtime.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities through process improvements, waste reduction, and supplier negotiations.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure Baden maintenance operations comply with all MTO, DOT, and internal safety requirements.
  • Champion a strong safety culture and reinforce adherence to preventive maintenance and hazard-control practices.
  • Conduct audits, inspections, and root-cause investigations to mitigate operational risks and maintain compliance.

Strategic Planning & Continuous Improvement

  • Partner with the Vice President, Fleet Maintenance to support long-term asset management plans, equipment replacement strategies, and enterprise initiatives.
  • Assess emerging maintenance technologies, diagnostic tools, and best practices to improve operational efficiency.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts focused on sustainability, reliability, and operational excellence across the Baden shops.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • College diploma or university degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fleet Management, or related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum 8–10 years of progressive fleet maintenance experience, ideally in a transportation/logistics environment, with 5+ years in a senior leadership role overseeing multi-shop or multi-team operations.

Technical Skills

  • Strong technical understanding of heavy truck, trailer, and reefer systems and maintenance requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience with preventive maintenance programs, maintenance budgeting, and fleet management systems.

Leadership & Competencies

  • Proven ability to lead multiple teams and manage cross-functional maintenance operations.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to influence, coach, and develop managers and frontline staff.

Working Conditions

  • Primary work location is the Baden maintenance facility, with regular presence across all three shops.
  • Occasional travel to other Erb locations may be required.
  • Role involves a combination of office work and time spent in shop-floor environments.
  • Additional hours may be required during peak operational periods or major maintenance projects.
  • Possible exposure to noise, dust, dirt, and varying weather conditions when working in or around shop or yard areas.
  • On-call for emergencies and expected to respond to urgent operational issues outside regular business hours.
