Burlington, Ontario, Canada SecondShop Full time

At SecondShop, we're a team of Canadians who believe in doing better—for our country, your wallets, and our planet.

We started with a simple idea: why should perfectly good products go to waste or sit unsold when people like you are out there looking for smart ways to save? We have made it our mission to source the highest quality open-box, overstocked, and scratch-and-dent products from the top brands - offering them to Canadians at up to 50% off. But we are not just about savings—we're about changing how people shop. Say goodbye to paying full price and hello to smarter spending.

People Business Partner

We're looking for a hands-on People Business Partner to act as the primary people partner for our Burlington-based teams. This role is fully on site, five days per week, and is designed for someone who thrives close to the business—working directly with managers and employees to solve real people challenges in real time.

You'll own day-to-day employee relations, advise leaders on performance and conduct matters, support and deliver recruitment, and ensure our people systems and processes are operating effectively. This is a senior, execution-led role with meaningful autonomy and responsibility, suited to someone who brings sound judgement, credibility with leaders, and strong operational HR experience.

What You'll Do
Employee Relations & Manager Partnership
  • Act as the primary People Business Partner for leaders and teams in Burlington
  • Provide day-to-day advice and guidance on employee relations matters including complaints, performance issues, attendance concerns, and conduct matters
  • Lead investigations, disciplinary processes, and performance improvement plans, ensuring fairness, consistency, and legal compliance
  • Coach managers on effective people management and difficult conversations
  • Build trusted relationships with leaders while maintaining appropriate challenge and independence
Recruitment & Workforce Support
  • Support and oversee end-to-end hiring processes, ensuring quality, pace, and consistency
  • Advise managers on role design, level setting, and hiring decisions
  • Ensure a strong and professional candidate experience

  • Own the end-to-end onboarding experience, ensuring new hires are set up for success from day one

  • Partner with managers on early performance, integration, and engagement
  • Oversee offboarding processes including exits, documentation, system access, and exit interviews
  • Surface themes and insights from onboarding and exits to leadership
People Systems & Operations
  • Own and administer people systems including ATS and HRIS
  • Ensure data accuracy, reporting integrity, and process compliance
  • Act as the local expert for people systems, resolving issues and improving workflows
  • Continuously refine people processes to support scale and operational effectiveness
Compliance & People Operations
  • Ensure compliance with Ontario employment legislation and internal policies
  • Support payroll, benefits, and employee changes in coordination with external providers
  • Maintain strong documentation, records, and audit readiness
  • Contribute to the development of pragmatic people policies and practices that work in a fast-moving environment
Who We're Looking For
  • 6–10+ years of experience across HR Operations, People Ops, or HR Business Partner roles
  • Strong, hands-on experience managing employee relations and advising leaders
  • Proven ability to operate with autonomy and sound judgement
  • Experience partnering directly with managers in operational or frontline environments
  • Solid recruitment experience across a range of role types
  • Strong working knowledge of ATS and HRIS systems
  • Comfortable balancing empathy with firmness and clarity
  • Highly organised, detail-oriented, and execution focused
  • Able and willing to work on site in Burlington five days per week
What We Offer
  • A senior, trusted people role with real ownership and influence
  • Competitive compensation plan based on experience ($70-$90,000)
  • Direct exposure to leadership and operational decision-making
  • The opportunity to shape how people practices operate on the ground
  • A fast-growing business where practical people leadership truly matters
