Position Purpose & Overview

SJS, is a leading independent, all gender K-12 IB school in Vancouver, Canada. At SJS, we are committed to excellence in education, student safety, and community engagement. The Building Services Worker (BSW) is an essential part of the Facilities team, ensuring the school's environment is clean, safe, and welcoming for students, staff, parents, and visitors.

St. John's School (SJS) is seeking a qualified and experienced Building Services Worker. The Building Services Worker ensures that school buildings and grounds are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary condition. The BSW supports daily operations by performing janitorial duties, maintenance tasks, and event logistics. The role contributes to a positive and efficient school environment that supports learning, teaching, and community life.

The Building Services Worker will be expected to work either a regular morning shift (8:00AM to 4:00PM) or an afternoon shift (1:00PM to 9:00PM), Monday to Friday.

Key Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities and duties are inclusive of, but not limited to:

Cleaning

  • Perform routine cleaning of classrooms, offices, stairwells, hallways, washrooms, and common areas.
  • Replenish consumables and ensure washrooms meet hygiene and safety standards.
  • Clean exterior surfaces including pressure washing and graffiti removal.
  • Conduct seasonal duties such as snow removal, leaf blowing, and light landscaping.
  • Monitor and clean up school grounds, parkade, and surrounding areas.

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Perform maintenance tasks including plumbing, carpentry, painting, drywall repair, lighting replacement, and equipment upkeep.
  • Conduct routine inspections of playgrounds, drains, and rooftops; address or escalate concerns.
  • Support minor furniture assembly and equipment troubleshooting.
  • Troubleshoots electrical, plumbing and heating issues.
  • Inspects playground structures for defects, makes repairs and/or advises Manager, Facilities & Transportation of action to be taken.

Operations & Event Support

  • Respond to staff requests using digital work order/ticketing systems.
  • Assist with daily setup/teardown of furniture and equipment for school events.
  • Manage traffic during drop-off and pick-up; assist with crowd and space control.
  • Support emergency procedures including fire drills and building evacuations.
  • Deliver packages, supplies, and internal mail as required.
  • Lock/unlock doors, monitor site access, and report safety/security concens.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Follow WorkSafeBC protocols and internal safety guidelines.
  • Report hazards and incidents promptly.
  • Participate in required safety and emergency response training.
  • Maintain current WHMIS and First Aid certifications.

Technology & Communication

  • Use digital systems for task tracking and communication (e.g., email, ticketing software).
  • Communicate clearly with team members and school staff to ensure service expectations are met.

Required Qualifications and Key Skills

Education & Work Experience

  • Experience in Facilities or Building Services related roles.
  • Building Services Worker certificate is considered an asset.
  • WHMIS certification or knowledge.
  • Valid BC Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate.
  • BC Class 5 Driver's License (and ICBC driver's abstract).
  • Experience using digital work order systems is considered an asset.

Qualities and Skills

  • Basic proficiency in using computers and mobile devices.
  • Physical abilities to lift up to 50 lbs and work indoors/outdoors in various conditions.
  • Ability to operate a genie lift and/or pallet jack is considered an asset.
  • Effectively communicates with teachers, staff, students and parents.
  • Demonstrates a professional and courteous manner when interacting with students, parents, and guests, reflecting St. John's School values.
  • Willingness to take on new tasks and to learn new skills; a flexible mindset.
  • Self-motivated and team player with a proven ability to work independently.
  • Able to work in variable climate conditions, indoors and outdoors, with and around various machinery.

Conditions of Employment

  • The successful candidate will be required to complete child abuse prevention training, concussion training, Level 1 first-aid training provided by St. John's School and provide consent for a criminal background check for the vulnerable sector.
  • Clearance on criminal record checks for vulnerable sector is a condition of employment
  • The ability to legally work in Canada, in an educational setting is a condition of employment.

Job Information

  • Full-time, permanent position starting December 1st, 2025.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Work location: on-site.
  • Annual salary ranges from $55,000 to $58,000, based on experience.
