HOURLY WAGE
$22.30 weekdays plus Sat & Sun shift differential
-health & dental after successful 3-month probationary period.
COMMUTE
-If commuting by public transit, please confirm reliable access to all shift times.
-Residing within 20 minutes of Murrayville is an asset.
POSITION SUMMARY
-Under the direction of the Food Services Manager & Dining Room Supervisor.
-Prepare, organize, cook & batch-cook complete Lunch and Dinner meals on a regular basis, specializing in Senior's comfort foods (some recipes & instructions provided) and Western savory cuisine an asset.
-Responsible for the preparation and garnishing of attractively plated, nutritious meals for residents and guests by monitoring food quality, quantity, appearance, and portion size.
-Ensure that food is prepared and served in a timely manner to meet guest expectations and company standards.
-Ensures cleanliness and of the kitchen and equipment in accordance with public health standards and regulations.
WEEKLY SHIFT
ON: Thursday-Monday* usually 9:30 am - 6:00 pm
OFF: Tuesday and Monday
-Requests for time off or traded shifts available.
-Schedule may include STAT holidays.
*Shifts are subject to change, with notice whenever possible.
FOOD SERVICE DUTIES
- Food preparation: Prepares and produces meals and catered services as per the posted menu, following HACCP principles.
- Collects, labels and stores food according to Food Safe regulations.
- Monitors & records correct temperatures in accordance with Fraser Health including but not limited to food, fridge and freezer temperatures, dish and pot washing.
- Efficient time management, preparing for the next day by forecasting food production requirements while planning for effective utilization of food and leftovers.
- Specialty foods for residents with allergies or prescribed minced or puree foods is part of the cook's role to meet the changing needs of our residents.
- Special events: Execute brunches, catering or any other special events as assigned.
- Provides suggestions for menu planning and recipe development acknowledging resident satisfaction.
- Plate dishes attractively and efficiently, ensuring excellent quality & taste.
- Follow the Dining Room Supervisor's instruction as it pertains to resident interaction. Work in tandem to provide the best resident experience.
- Ensures that menu changes are approved by the dining room supervisor.
- Short order menu items prepared (e.g. grilled veggies, steak, fish & chips, etc.).
- Actively assisting Chef with monthly audits, controlling food costs (portion control & weekly food inventory counts and variance investigations and follow-up training).
- Dishwashing: Clean up after oneself, willing & able to wash dishes, supporting the Food Services team & needed efficiencies.
- Deliveries: Prepares, receives, and stores food purchases and supply orders.
- Clean as you go: Maintain kitchen cleaning to excellent standards, as well as exceptional Food Safe standards.
- Provides general supervision of the food service operation in the absence of the Food Services Manager and Lead Cook.
- Ability to troubleshoot kitchen equipment issues.
- High standards of Health & Safety, Food Safety & informing Supervisor of Maintenance issues is expected.
- May assist in the training of prep-food staff involved with food preparation and proper use of equipment.
- Replaces staff for call-ins.
- Attends staff meetings, show-times, and participates in departmental in-services.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Be a POSITIVE ROLE MODEL within the Food Service Dept.
- Demonstrates excellent public relations and consistently shows courtesy, caring, understanding, compassion and respect to residents, families, visitors & the Avalon team. At the same time, emotional manipulation of seniors (vulnerable citizens) will not be tolerated.
- Ongoing education: Participation in ongoing educational programs (e.g. health & safety).
- Medical emergencies: A willingness to attend emergency needs are they arise (e.g. resident or team members' diabetic low, injuries).
- Performs all other duties as assigned or delegated by the Food Services Manager, Lead Cook, or other members of the residences management team.
- Maintains effective communication, both written and verbal with co-workers, Uses appropriate lines of communication with management &/or staff.
- Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WorkSafe BC regulations, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), and Fraser Health's Food Premises regulations. This includes recognizing health and safety hazards, reporting incidents, fulfilling responsibilities under the applicable legislation, as well as participating in in-services and fire drills.

Education/Qualification Requirements:
- Minimum of grade 12 education.
- Red Seal will be given preference.
- Chef training or culinary management diploma or certificate is an asset.
- Must have Safe Food Handler's certificate or equivalent.
- Must be able to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, in the English language.
- Familiarity with computerized on-line ordering systems an asset.
- First Aid Certificate an asset.
Experience:
- Culinary: Minimum 2 years experience in quantity cooking and food preparation.
