Applied Research Technologist-Mining Equipment Intern (PNRK-12 months)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Cambrian College's Applied Research Department has an immediate requirement for an Applied Research Technologist-Mining Equipment Intern on one-year internship basis.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Mechanical and Advanced Vehicle Systems Engineering the Applied Research Technologist-Mining Equipment Intern will play a key role in the collaborative research, development, and testing initiatives between Cambrian College's Centre for Smart Mining and its partners. The incumbent will be based at both Cambrian College's EV Lab supporting engineering and testing activities related to electric vehicles and other innovative vehicle technologies for underground and surface mining applications.

This role involves hands-on testing, data collection, system performance evaluation, and prototype validation, ensuring that the joint projects leverage the expertise and assets of both organizations. The incumbent will work closely with faculty researchers, engineering teams, technicians, and industry stakeholders to advance the development of electrified and autonomous mining vehicle systems.

Key Duties:

  • Assist in developing and executing test plans for mining vehicle prototypes using Cambrian's EV Lab assets.
  • Collect, analyze, and report on vehicle performance data (battery systems, drivetrains, control systems, etc.).
  • Support validation testing for new electrification and automation solutions in mining vehicle applications.
  • Serve as a technical liaison between Cambrian's Centre for Smart Mining and its clients, ensuring alignment of research and development efforts
  • Work with industry partner's engineering team to integrate feedback from field trials into iterative design improvements
  • Develop test documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and data reports
  • Assist in writing research reports and technical documentation for funding agencies and industry partners
  • Ensure proper setup and operation of test environments for various vehicle testing scenarios
  • Support safety and compliance protocols for laboratory and field testing activities
  • Assist in training sessions and workshops for students and industry professionals on advanced mining vehicle technologies
  • Contribute to industry knowledge-sharing through presentations, publications, and collaborative events
Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of a three-year postsecondary diploma or degree in Electrical engineering, mechatronics, instrumentation , software. (A copy of educational documents must be submitted with application *** education completed outside of Canada, applicants are required to submit a WES or ICAS with their application).
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working with mining or heavy duty equipment
  • Experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD or equivalent design software
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and have access to a reliable vehicle.

Additional Assets/Preferred:

  • Experience working in a post-secondary education environment
  • Adept at staying informed
