Job Summary
The Area Manager I, Fleet (Post‑Collections) is responsible for overseeing all maintenance, reliability, and lifecycle management activities for yellow‑iron and heavy‑equipment assets across post‑collection operations, including transfer stations, material recovery facilities (MRFs), landfills, and organics facilities. This role ensures equipment availability, operational continuity, and regulatory compliance while driving cost discipline, technician development, and site‑specific safety performance. The position partners closely with Operations, Corporate Fleet, and Maintenance teams to maximize asset utilization and support the area's productivity and profitability goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.
Operational Leadership & Asset Management
- Continually drives post‑collection profitability through effective oversight of all heavy‑equipment maintenance activities, including cost management, technician performance, equipment uptime, and adherence to WM's high safety and training standards.
- Oversees safe, compliant, and reliable operation of yellow‑iron assets—including dozers, loaders, and related post‑collection equipment—to support daily site throughput, material movement, environmental compliance, and production goals.
- Manages the efficient utilization and deployment of heavy equipment, ensuring alignment with operational demands, lifecycle targets, capital planning requirements, and corporate asset strategies.
- Conducts regular equipment condition assessments and site evaluations to verify maintenance quality, identify performance gaps, and ensure compliance with technical specifications and regulatory standards.
Maintenance Program Execution
- Ensures maintenance shops supporting post‑collection operations are adequately staffed with technicians skilled in hydraulics, electrical systems, undercarriage, compaction equipment, and diagnostics required for heavy‑equipment environments.
- Ensures equipment management systems, telematics, PM scheduling tools, and maintenance tracking programs are properly utilized to reduce downtime, drive predictive maintenance, and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Oversees PM program execution, repair quality, work‑order management, and shop cleanliness standards through routine inspections, 5S practices, and adherence to preventive maintenance procedures.
Safety, Compliance & Mission to Zero
- Champions WM's Mission to Zero by enforcing safe equipment operating procedures, conducting safety audits, identifying and mitigating hazards, and ensuring compliance with environmental, and site‑specific regulatory requirements.
People Leadership
- Leads, mentors, and develops Post‑Collections Fleet Managers, providing clear direction, performance expectations, and ongoing feedback to ensure consistent execution of maintenance programs, safety standards, regulatory compliance, and equipment lifecycle strategies across all post‑collection sites.
- Ensures Fleet Managers supporting transfer stations, landfills, MRFs, and organics facilities are aligned on priorities, including equipment readiness, PM compliance, downtime reduction, technician development, and safety initiatives.
- Fosters a collaborative leadership culture among Post‑Collections Fleet Managers, encouraging cross‑site problem solving, sharing of best practices, coordinated resource planning, and consistency in maintenance practices and decision‑making.
- Provides ongoing training and professional development opportunities to technicians and Fleet Managers.
- Builds strong working relationships with Operations leaders to ensure maintenance and equipment management strategies support site productivity, safety, and long‑term asset performance.
Financial & Administrative Responsibilities
- Meets all financial review dates, reporting deadlines, and corporate‑driven program requirements in a timely manner.
- Supports the annual budgeting process, including forecasting maintenance costs, evaluating capital needs, and identifying cost‑reduction opportunities.
- Ensures accurate completion and submission of required reports, including equipment performance metrics, downtime summaries, safety documentation, regulatory compliance reports, and shop productivity measures.
Qualifications
A. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent experience
- Five (5) years of relevant work experience in post‑collection operations, heavy‑equipment maintenance
- Five (5) years of management experience overseeing maintenance personnel, equipment operations, or shop environments
- Valid driver's license required.
B. Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of yellow‑iron equipment, shop operations, hydraulics, electrical systems, and heavy‑equipment diagnostics
- Ability to utilize equipment management systems, maintenance planning software, and telematics platforms
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced, safety‑sensitive environment

☒ Remote: This remote role requires significant travel, with up to 80% travel to sites throughout the Canada market area.
The expected base pay range for this remote position in Ontario is $135,000 - $145,000. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific salary offered to a successful candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate's relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for bonus. This position is for an existing vacancy.
