WHO WE ARE

Special Olympics Ontario (SOO) is a non-profit organization that provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Our mission is to create an inclusive community by offering athletes the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and build lasting relationships.

With over 23,000 athletes and over 7,500 volunteers across the province, we are committed to building diverse, equitable, and inclusive communities that celebrate the abilities of every individual.

OPPORTUNITY

Special Olympics Ontario is part of a worldwide charity organization and is seeking new enthusiastic coaches, and general volunteers to help run a local weekly swim program for individuals with intellectual disabilities beginning in February 2026 and ending in April 2026.

We are seeking coaches in various areas, specifically
Stouffville, Toronto, North York and Etobicoke

Responsibilities include helping athletes improve swim skills, ensuring safety on the pool deck, encouraging athletes during training, and working with the coaching team to create a fun, inclusive environment. No competitive coaching experience required, just enthusiasm, reliability, and a commitment to our athletes. Special Olympics coaching resources are available. These particular programs are not a Learn to Swim program.

Whether you have experience in sports, coaching, working with individuals with intellectual disabilities, or simply a passion for helping others, we would love to have you involved

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

We're seeking individuals who are:

  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • Swim stroke knowledge is greatly welcome, but not necessary
  • Passionate about inclusion and community sport
  • Strong communicators and collaborators
  • Organized, reliable, and proactive
  • Excited to make a difference in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Previous volunteer experience is an asset but not required.

HOW TO APPLY

Follow these steps to register as a Special Olympics Ontario volunteer:

Step 1: Register Online

  • Visit the Special Olympics Ontario Membership Portal.
  • Create an account and complete the online application form.
  • Select the applicable
    community/location

Step 2: Obtain Necessary Documents and Training

  • Police Record Check:
    Request a Vulnerable Sector Search from your local police service (a request letter is provided).
  • References:
    Provide two non-related references.
  • Safe Sport Training:
    Complete the free NCCP Safe Sport training online and upload your completion record.

Step 3: Await Approval

  • Your application will be reviewed by a community contact.
  • Once approved, you will be considered an active volunteer.
