The Senior Medical Advisor, Accreditation (0.7 FTE) works to provide specialized expertise to support CPSA's Accreditation with a focus on the Non-Hospital Surgical Facilities program. The Senior Medical Advisor is responsible for contributing specialized clinical knowledge to the planning, execution, and follow-up of assessments and inspections. This position collaborates closely with accreditation staff, inspectors, and medical directors to provide pre-inspection consultation, real-time clinical guidance during assessments, and post-inspection follow-up expertise.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide anesthesiology subject matter expertise for CPSA's Accreditation assessments and inspections, ensuring specialty availability and high-quality clinical review within required timelines.
  • Participate in the planning, scheduling, and scoping of assessments, contributing specialty insight to ensure appropriate clinical focus and efficient coordination.
  • Engage with assessors and facility personnel to clarify clinical practices, staff or patient safety concerns and any areas of deviation from standards observed during assessments.
  • Provide in-house expertise to reduce reliance on external specialists and ensure consistent clinical interpretation of standards across assessments.
  • Assess and arrange external assistance as appropriate (e.g. expert opinions from subject matter experts).
  • Communication with external parties including medical facilities and medical directors engaged within an accreditation process, assessors and other external stakeholders and/or partners etc.
  • Contribute to timely delivery of accreditation reports by providing concise findings and recommendations based on accreditation standards.
  • Provide specialty input for communications with accredited facilities (and those seeking accreditation) regarding standard requirements, deficiencies, or corrective actions.
  • May provide coverage assistance and respond to queries when other team members are absent.
  • Approach all assessment activities with clinical objectivity, regulatory fairness, and a patient-safety lens.
  • Support orientation and education of Accreditation team members and assessors on accreditation standards and clinical risk areas.
  • Support the refinement of CPSA accreditation standards related to their scope, based on emerging evidence and field experience.
  • Provide medical expertise and support to other accreditation programs including expert opinion reviews and accreditation committee work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications

  • Royal College certification (FRCPC) in Anesthesiology or College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFCP) with additional training in anesthesiology.
  • 10 years of anesthesia and/or perioperative care experience in a relevant clinical setting.
  • Broad medical knowledge and experience in a variety of health care settings.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience in surgical facility environments or anesthesia leadership roles.
  • Experience with accreditation, quality improvement, clinical governance and administrative experience preferred.
  • Holds sound knowledge of CPSA policies and practices.
  • Superior communication skills, including active listening, writing of correspondence and reports, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to analyze various information to make decisions and recommendations on complex issues.
  • Computer literacy required, including familiarity with Office365 applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

SALARY

The annual salary for this position is $182,276 and includes a comprehensive benefit package including pension plan.
