Naturalist - Victoria

Onboard the Salish Sea Eclipse as a Deckhand/Naturalist, you are the most important link between the marine wildlife and our guests. You are more than a marine professional; you are an educator, an entertainer, and a steward of the BC coastal ecosystem.

Your primary responsibility is the safety and security of the passenger on board as well as the vessel and your fellow crew members. You will need to be physically fit and understand general seamanship. You will have an outgoing personality and the ability to quickly connect with guests from around the world. You will possess a wide range of knowledge of coastal BC wildlife, history, and geography.

We place a high emphasis on marine education and focus our tour content on the diversity, complexity, and fragility of the Salish Sea ecosystem.

 Desired Skills and Personal Attributes:

1.  Working towards a degree or diploma in biology, environmental science, geography, or another related field

2.  Previous experience working on boats and/or in marine environments 

3. Ability to work in a team environment and take direction from the Master of the vessel 

4. Previous experience in the whale watching industry or knowledge of local marine environments

5.  Second language skills and international travel experience 

6. High degree of strength, endurance, and physical fitness

Certifications Required within the First Six Months of Employment: Applicants who hold necessary certifications will receive preference:

 
• Marine Emergency Duties A-2 or Domestic Vessel Safety (DVS); and

 
• Basic Marine First Aid
