JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Cook

Reports To: Operations Manager

Operations Responsibilities:

Prepare and cook homecooked meals and fast-food dishes for guests of Gary Bs hostel and the general public;

Prepare catering orders, as required;

Oversee kitchen equipment;

Costing and budgets for daily specials;

Maintain an inventory and record of food, supplies and equipment;

Plan menus, determine size of food portions, estimate food requirements and costs, monitor, prepare weekly grocery / supply order;

Washing and sanitizing the kitchen equipment, surfaces, pots & pans;

Sweeping and mopping kitchen floors at end of shift;

Ensure that kitchen garbage is taken away and containers are clean;

Must complete training provided by the Labrador Friendship Centre;

Other related duties, as required.

Qualifications:

Completion of high school, some post-secondary education in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;

Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel);

Ability to meet and relate to the general public on a daily basis;

Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

Successful applicant will be required to submit a satisfactory certificate of conduct.

Other:

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and guests.

Ability to train new employees in the techniques of food handling and serving meals.

Ability to maintain prescribed records.

Knowledge of materials and methods use in preparing food on a quantity basis and of the use and care of utensils and equipment.

Knowledge of health hazards in food preparation and service and of effective precautionary measures.

Ability to cook and bake pastries and desserts on a fairly large scale.

Ability to work while standing and under conditions of high temperature.

Ability to work from written menus and recipes.

Assets:

Knowledge of Labrador Indigenous cultures.

Knowledge of an Indigenous language.

Indigenous or of Indigenous ancestry.

Wage:

$21.00 per hour.

Hours:

28 hours per week plus extra if coverage required.
