The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting for a Pipeline Inspector, Field Operations, Central to join the Regulatory Compliance (RC) branch. As a Pipeline Inspector, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and environmental integrity of our operations. You will independently assess and respond to incidents and stakeholder complaints, conduct thorough compliance assurance activities, and represent the AER in various industry forums. This position not only allows you to work independently and with a dedicated and supportive team but also offers the chance to lead complex inspections and contribute to provincial initiatives. What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Lead and independently conduct complex inspections on pipeline systems and operations to ensure they meet regulatory requirements. This also includes associated compliance aspects including potential impact to public land, protection of the environment and working with the public and indigenous groups.
  • Respond to pipeline failures to ensure public safety and environmental protection, seek to understand the cause of the failure and determine compliance.
  • Respond to calls on the 24-hour emergency response/complaint line (on-call). Respond to and support others in handling incidents and stakeholder complaints. Support the resolution of complex complaints between AER stakeholders.
  • Work directly with industry to address concerns. Lead meetings and deliver technical presentations to industry and government agencies.
  • Support provincial teams as needed and be a primary representative when developing proactive inspection programs. Share information between provincial teams and field
  • centre teams. Provide training or mentorship when needed.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including completing hazard assessments, following PPE protocols, conducting bump testing and calibration of monitors, and following safe driving practices.

What we're looking for in you:

  • Diploma in engineering, environmental sciences or other related education.
  • 6+ years direct regulatory or field operations; or extensive related oil and gas experience.
  • Strong understanding of pipeline operations, including regulatory requirements and operational best practices. Industry experience in conducting pipeline failure reviews is preferred.
  • Experience in working with the Public Lands Act, Water Act or the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act is an asset.
  • Highly independent and flexible, with the ability to adapt to changing situations and environments.
  • High degree of initiative, capable of taking proactive steps to close knowledge gaps, address issues and improve processes.
  • Comfortable working alone in remote environments, with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Detail-oriented to ensure data integrity and accuracy in all inspections and reports.

Additional Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
  • Pre-placement medical and a fully valid class 5 driver's license along with a positive driving record is required.
  • Ability to drive long distances, climb stairs, ladders, walking around industrial sites, remote locations, spill sites, water ways, sampling, wearing boots and PPE in all types of weather conditions.
  • Additional training is required and will be provided: ex) First Aid, H2S Alive, Driver Training.
  • Overnight travel is required occasionally.
  • This role is comprised of 20% field work vs. 80% office work.
  • This role has a business requirement to reside in and work from the Field Operations Central boundaries ).
