Imam Needed – Corner Brook Islamic Centre (Sabeel Centre – Corner Brook Chapter)

The Corner Brook Islamic Centre, a chapter of Sabeel Muslim Youth & Community Centre (Halifax), is seeking a qualified, community-minded Imam to serve the growing Muslim community in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Position Summary

We are looking for an Imam who combines sound Islamic knowledge with strong communication skills, community awareness, and the ability to support a diverse Muslim population. The Imam will lead and oversee religious, educational, and community programs in coordination with the local Executive Team in Corner Brook and the Imam Committee at Sabeel Headquarters in Halifax.

Location: Corner Brook, NL

Residency Requirement: The Imam must be willing to reside in Corner Brook.

Key Responsibilities

The Imam will be expected to:

Lead prayers, Jumu'ah khutbahs, and major Islamic occasions.

Provide religious guidance, counseling, and community support.

Conduct marriage contracts (nikah) and deliver premarital training programs.

Design, conduct, and supervise Islamic activities and educational programs in and outside the masjid.

Accommodate and respond to the needs of a diverse Muslim community, including youth, families, newcomers, and students.

Work on establishing a Muslim Student Association (MSA) at Memorial University – Corner Brook Campus and support student programming.

Build strong relationships with the local educational community and wider society.

Collaborate closely with:

The Imam Committee at Sabeel Headquarters (Halifax) to establish and improve religious and educational programs.

The Executive/ Operation Team on the ground in Corner Brook to ensure smooth operations and community engagement.

Required Qualifications

Strong foundation in Islamic knowledge and traditional learning.

Fluent in English (spoken and written).

Proven ability to work effectively with diverse communities.

Strong interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills.

Assets (Preferred Qualifications)

Bachelor's degree (4-year program) in Islamic Jurisprudence / Sharia / Islamic Studies or equivalent traditional scholarship.

Fluency in Arabic.

Currently residing in Canada, or holding:

A valid Canadian visa, or

A passport that allows entry to Canada without visa restrictions.

(These are major assets but not mandatory.)

Compensation

Salary and compensation package will be determined following the interview, based on qualifications and experience.
