Position Summary

Within the context of a patient and family-centered model of care, and in accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic directions of Providence Health Care ("Providence"), we are seeking a General Surgeon with specialized expertise in breast surgical oncology or general surgical oncology to join the Department of Surgery at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital Providence Breast Centre in Vancouver, BC.

The successful candidate will practice within a clinical and academic environment, providing advanced surgical care while contributing to education, research, and leadership initiatives in alignment with PHC's Mission, Vision, and Values.

Providence Breast Centre (PBC) is Vancouver's only breast centre. It serves patients in the Greater Vancouver area and is a referral centre for complex patients throughout British Columbia and Yukon Territory. PBC provides clinical space, nurse navigation and centralized referral pathways for all breast patient referred to our group. Surgeons at PBC are compensated by alternate payment plan and work under a group governance model. The successful applicant would have similar supports and expectations. Mount Saint Joseph Hospital is a teaching facility affiliated with the University of British Columbia.

Clinical Responsibilities

Providence Health Care is seeking a general surgeon with fellowship training in breast surgical oncology or general surgical oncology for a full-time position at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital in Vancouver, BC. The successful candidate will join a group practice in breast surgery at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital within the division of general surgery, currently with 10 general surgeon members. Requirements include FRCSC in General Surgery, Canadian or US fellowship training (or equivalent) in breast surgery, eligibility for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC, and eligibility for Canadian Medical Protective Association coverage (or equivalent).

Elective practice will be primarily breast surgery in all aspects, including benign and malignant disease joining 6 surgeons at the Providence Breast Centre. Elective general surgery (excluding endoscopy) may be considered. Emergency practice may be considered and will include the full spectrum of acute general surgery to encompass referrals from the ER and inpatient wards, with participation in the emergency call schedule. Access to the operating room and inpatient beds will be allocated similar to the other fulltime surgeons and on-call expectations will be commensurate with operating room elective time.

Successful candidates will work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to provide patient-centred care, and contribute to program development, quality improvement, and clinical innovation consistent with PHC priorities.

Academic, Teaching, and Leadership Responsibilities

Preference will be given to candidates with graduate degrees, proven records of research activity and administrative initiatives, and strong references with regards to clinical and scholarly excellence, teaching ability and collegiality. There will be expectations to lead research endeavors, active participation in breast surgery quality improvement and undergraduate and postgraduate education.

The candidate will participate actively in undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education, provide supervision and mentorship to medical students, residents, and fellows, engage in scholarly activity, research, or quality improvement aligned with academic appointment expectations, and demonstrate clinical and academic leadership, including participation in committees, program development, or administrative roles.

Required Qualifications

  • MD degree with completion of an accredited General Surgery residency program
  • Fellowship training in breast surgical oncology (or general surgical oncology with special focus in breast oncology)
  • Preference given to candidates with a Master's degree (e.g., MSc, MPH, MEd, or equivalent)
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) or US equivalent
  • Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC)
  • Eligibility for malpractice insurance coverage through the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) or equivalent
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in clinical, academic, or administrative roles
  • Proven commitment to teaching and medical education

Academic Appointment

The successful candidate must be eligible for and apply for an academic appointment with the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Medicine, at a rank commensurate with experience.
