Overview
The Utility Relief Operator plays a vital role in supporting daily operations at our biogas production facility. This position ensures safe, efficient, and compliant handling of feedstock, operation of pre‑processing systems, and general plant support throughout the anaerobic digestion process. The ideal candidate brings mechanical aptitude, experience in industrial environments, and a strong commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
Work Environment
This position operates within an active organic waste and biogas production environment. Work involves routine exposure to food waste, strong odors, and conditions that may be dirty, noisy, or outdoors. The role includes physical tasks such as lifting, bending, and extended periods of walking or standing. Applicants must be comfortable with direct contact with organic materials and prepared for the environmental and physical demands of daily operations.
Key Responsibilities
Operational & Processing
- Receive, inspect, and document incoming organic feedstock.
- Operate forklifts and mobile equipment to unload, move, and stage materials.
- Run depackaging systems, monitor throughput, adjust settings, and perform sanitation.
- Conduct daily inspections and assist with monitoring pumps, mixers, separators, and digestion equipment.
- Support troubleshooting of mechanical, hydraulic, and process issues; follow SOPs and respond to alarms.
Maintenance & Equipment Support
- Assist with preventive maintenance on pumps, conveyors, blowers, and screening systems.
- Perform minor repairs and mechanical adjustments under supervision.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in safe working condition.
- Operate loaders, telehandlers, and other mobile equipment for material handling.
- Perform heavy lifting and general material handling tasks.
Housekeeping, Safety & Compliance
- Maintain clean, organized work areas including washdowns and equipment sanitation.
- Keep walkways, pads, and outdoor areas safe and tidy.
- Follow all safety procedures including PPE, lockout/tagout, and confined space protocols.
- Support environmental compliance related to feedstock handling, wastewater, emissions, and site cleanliness.
- Participate in safety meetings and ongoing training.
Qualifications
- Mechanical aptitude or experience in industrial maintenance.
- Forklift certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in outdoor/industrial conditions.
- Comfortable working around pumps, conveyors, rotating equipment, and biological processes.
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow SOPs.
- Ability to operate heavy machinery safely.
- Willingness to work in a waste processing plant setting.
Preferred Skills (Assets)
- Experience in industrial, agricultural, waste management, or manufacturing environments.
- Experience with mobile equipment (telehandler, loader, forklift).
- Mechanical or electrical troubleshooting experience.
- Familiarity with SCADA or PLC‑based systems.
- Experience in anaerobic digestion, wastewater treatment, or process operations.
- Strong attention to detail with logs, inspections, and documentation.
- Understanding of organic waste streams, contamination control, or feedstock quality.
