HSE Coordinator

The HSE Coordinator for Underground Mining is responsible for supporting the HSE Manager in the implementation and monitoring of all safety programs and initiatives on active underground mining projects. This position plays a key role in the day-to-day safety of personnel and operations, with an emphasis on safety preparedness, hazard identification, incident prevention, mine rescue, and worker training.
Responsibilities
Field Safety Support
- Provide visible, on-the-ground safety presence in underground and surface areas of the site.
- Conduct safety observations, inspections, and audits to ensure compliance with site safety protocols and regulatory standards.
- Support supervisors and field crews in identifying and mitigating risks during daily operations.
Worker Orientation & Training
- Deliver and track site-specific safety orientations for all personnel and contractors.
- Support the development and facilitation of toolbox talks, safety meetings, and ongoing worker training sessions.
- Monitor competency records and assist with training documentation and verification.
Mine Rescue & Emergency Response
- Assist with the coordination and execution of underground mine rescue planning and drills.
- Maintain readiness of mine rescue equipment and underground communication systems.
- Participate in mine rescue activities, including as an active member of the sites emergency response team.
Incident & Hazard Management
- Support incident investigations and participate in root cause analysis using ICAM or equivalent methods.
- Record, track, and follow up on hazard reports and corrective actions to ensure timely closeout.
Safety Systems & Reporting
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety documentation including inspections, permits, and training records.
- Support preparation of daily and weekly safety reports for internal and client distribution.
- Assist with digital safety system inputs (e.g., SiteDocs, Intelex, or company-specific platforms).
Regulatory Compliance
- Support site compliance with occupational health & safety regulations and underground mining legislation.
- Liaise with regulatory inspectors when required, under direction of the HSE Manager.

Compensation
- Competitive wage is offered with annual discretionary bonus and health benefits.
- Travel expenses are reimbursed.
Work Schedule
- Typical rotation: 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off or 20 days on / 10 days off or as dictated by project needs.
- Site-based role at a remote underground mining project.
- Extended periods working underground in physically demanding conditions.
Qualifications/Experience/Education Requirements
- 3–6 years of relevant health & safety experience in the mining or heavy construction industry, preferably with at least 1–2 years in underground mining.
- Occupational Health & Safety diploma, certificate, or related field of study preferred.
- Valid Mine Rescue certification or willingness to obtain and maintain mine rescue training.
- ICAM or equivalent incident investigation training is an asset.
- Strong understanding of underground mining hazards and controls (e.g., ground support, ventilation, equipment movement).
- Confident communicator with the ability to influence and engage at all levels.
- Familiarity with digital H&S systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Valid driver's license and physically able to work in challenging underground environments.

- Must be willing to take responsibility for project performance and internally motivated to set and achieve goals/targets.
- Must be open and honest in all communications internally and externally.
- Must be flexible in terms of assignments, work locations, and roles and be comfortable working in both industrial and office settings.
- Must have strong English written and verbal communication skills. Spanish communication skills are an asset.
