The Physician Assistant will work under the direct supervision of an immediately available Attending Critical Care Physician within a multidisciplinary team in an academic Intensive Care Unit (ICU) setting. The Physician Assistant will play a major role in facilitating consistent application of clinical protocols and continuity of care, and will also identify patients with acute clinical issues common to tertiary medical/surgical intensive care units and work within the multidisciplinary team to appropriately manage patient care. The Physician Assistant will provide a full range of physician assistant services in accordance with privileges granted, request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health care resources as indicated, order diagnostic tests as applicable, prescribe and dispense medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

The Medical Affairs department is responsible for overseeing administration for Professional Staff at Hamilton Health Sciences.  Medical Affairs works closely with the Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Executive, the Senior Medical Officer, and Physician Chiefs. Medical Affairs supports medical workforce recruitment, credentialing, resource planning/allocation, education, and communication within the hospital. The department supports medical learners at McMaster University Faculty of Health Science (FHS), partnering closely with the leadership of FHS.The four adult Intensive Care Units (ICU) at HHS provide care for up to 66 patients who either have, or are at high risk of developing, a life-threatening disease or injury, or those who have had major surgical procedures. These ICUs consist of highly trained inter-disciplinary teams, advanced life-support technology and monitoring equipment. The academic mandate includes a significant commitment to medical education at all levels of training. Many critical care physicians are active researchers making significant contribution to the latest evidence-based critical care medicine.
