What this role is all about:

Reporting to the VP, Credit, the 
Director, Commercial Credit
is responsible for leading the Commercial Credit function, ensuring an enterprise-wide risk management philosophy towards the portfolio, and appropriate controls and monitoring are in place in accordance with the Credit Union's risk appetite, Board approved policies, regulatory and internal guidelines. The incumbent manages the $3.4B commercial portfolio, providing leadership to the Commercial Credit team and leads results tied to our business objectives. The incumbent will collaborate with the growth teams and operational leaders to seek ongoing efficiencies and process improvements to work towards Beem's overall vision.

This role is open to hybrid working arrangements within British Columbia.

What you'll do:

Adjudication

  • Provide independent, objective review and adjudication of Commercial Credit applications within credit limits and makes recommendations and escalates as required.
  • Lead approval decisions and recommendations in functional areas while ensuring lending practices meet corporate policies, guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Approve loans within delegated lending authorities up to $20MM.
  • Adjudicate and structure highly complex lending files including large construction, land development, hospitality and operating companies while mitigating enterprise-wide risk.
  • Address escalation of activity and determine resolutions and recommendations as appropriate and escalating items to the VP, Credit as needed.

Leadership

  • As an active member of the Leadership Team by contributing to the corporate strategy development, adding value from a Credit Risk perspective and maintaining an enterprise-wide view.
  • Manages the effective management of the commercial credit portfolio, including setting targets, goals and performance expectations in line with Credit Union's strategy.
  • Builds a highly skilled, high performing and collaborative team, ensuring the team is prioritizing effectively, managing their stakeholders, and directly assisting in the achievement of business targets and goals.
  • Develops and leads strategic business plans considering complex internal and external factors including emerging requirements and organizational interdependencies.
  • Develops and communicates department strategies and objectives, ensuring understanding and alignment with business and teams.
  • Develop and lead the Credit and Commercial Credit strategy by leading initiatives and improving efficiencies within the Commercial Credit team.
  • Leads portfolio management and business acumen and provides technical leadership to answer key questions and discuss best practices.
  • Ensures Commercial Credit activities are conducted within the approved budget.

Reporting and Analysis

  • Provide overall Commercial Credit portfolio management including risk management and use of reporting and data to support decisions and recommendations.
  • Oversees management of the commercial portfolio of the Credit Union, including ensuring cap compliance and ensuring portfolio risk tolerance, is in line with the risk appetite of the Board.
  • Prepare reporting and development of narratives for senior leaders, MCC, Executives, Board and Regulatory bodies.
  • Conducts review and analysis of data and reporting, supporting decisions and recommendation as it relates to the commercial portfolio performance.
  • Identifies and escalates any emerging risks and opportunities for growth within the commercial portfolio.

Policy and Procedures

  • Oversee commercial credit policies, procedures, and guidelines. Providing relevant assessments and recommendations in its development, including the writing of policy and procedures.
  • Ensuring alignment of policies and guidelines across the organization, enhancing feedback loop to ensure effectiveness of policies and guidelines.
  • Ensures organizational compliance with Policy, and guidelines.

Collaboration

  • Partner with line of business heads regarding loan requests, member concerns and problem files as well as cap compliance and file management.
  • Partner with stakeholders to provide advice and guidance to ensure sound practices while enhancing business and fostering positive member relationships.
  • Present in Executives and Board Meetings as needed, including leading the Management Credit Committee (MCC) and reporting on portfolio status.
  • Partner with internal audit to review audit findings, develop recommendations, and action findings as appropriate within the team or escalate as needed.
  • Work with external stakeholders such as BC Financial Services Authority (BCFSA) and external auditors as required.
  • Support organizational mergers, acquisition and integration activities as needed, exercising the ability to lead with agility and curiosity.
  • Collaborate with Learning & Development team with training initiatives as needed.

What you'll bring:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in related field (Business, Economics, Finance, or other quantitative disciplines).
  • Minimum 10 years of commercial lending experience, including credit management roles.
  • Successful people management experience, including effective coaching and supporting career development.
  • Experience in cash flow lending and understanding of enterprise value-based credit structures.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge and judgement of long-term impact, comprehensive understanding of risk and strategy of business units.
  • Expert knowledge of commercial credit concepts including a broader understanding of business needs and ability to translate knowledge to organizational objectives.
  • Previous experience with leadership accountability for the performance of a portfolio of commercial loans, financial budgets and/or operational KPIs.
  • Demonstrated ability to use reporting, analytics, and data to deliver and lead results tied to strategic objectives.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and people management skills.
  • Equivalent combination of the above may be appropriate.

Compensation

Annual salary range: $141,400 - $165,000.
