Position Summary:

Under the direction of Supervisor of Native Youth Resource Centre the Indigenous Youth Outreach Worker will provide outreach supports to Indigenous Youth who are homeless, precariously housed, and in encampments; assisting youth obtain housing, to identify and attain their individual and personal goals and supporting their success in building and sustaining healthy connections within their community; ensuring accessibility and integration of individual and family services within the Native Youth Resource Centre programs.

Reporting to the Supervisor of Youth Outreach, the Indigenous Youth Outreach Worker will;

Key Responsibilities:

  • Connect with and develop relationships with homeless Indigenous youth years old).
  • Seek out and attend homeless encampments and areas which Indigenous homeless youth are.
  • Provide brief supports to youth which meet their immediate needs.
  • Prevent, early intervene, and develop programs and community outreach to youth.
  • Provide a range of outreach/referral services.
  • Support youth in expanding their support network within the community, drop in centres, shelters, and other support services.
  • Support youth through crisis management.
  • Maintain relationships with internal and external resources, partnerships with community groups.
  • Work collaboratively with the youth and other stakeholders in the community to develop service delivery plans that ensure youth have access to services and opportunities for healthy development.
  • Assist in building the relationships between youth and their community and promote awareness of the positive role of youth in the Indigenous community.
  • Implement and maintain strength based and evidence based professional standards of practice within the program and adhere to service standards in accordance with the Stages of Change model, a Positive Youth Development Framework and relevant legislation i.e., Child, Youth and Family Services Act.
  • Collect and maintain data collection as outlined by NCFST and funder requirements.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

  • Post-secondary education in Child and Youth Work and a minimum of 2 years directly related experience.
  • Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education in a related field and experience working with Indigenous youth will be considered.
  • Understanding of the unique dynamics that exist within the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultures.
  • Knowledge of social risk factors in relation to high-priority neighbourhoods and the Urban Indigenous community.
  • Knowledge and skills in the delivery of group programs and workshops that incorporate strength based and evidence based practices.
  • Excellent organizational, oral/verbal/written communication skills; initiative and respect for confidentiality.
  • Strong report writing, communication and computer skills.
  • Pass a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)
  • Experience in the Changes of Stage model of outreach practices is an asset.
  • This position requires the flexibility to be able to work evenings and weekends.
  • Access to a car is an asset.
  • Demonstrated understanding, and commitment to, integrating the Native Child and Family Services of Toronto Mission and values in to practice, service and relationships.
  • Demonstrated understanding of workplace Health and Safety practices and understanding of an employee's responsibility under current legislation.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff, to maintain effective communication and working relationships, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills, tact, sensitivity and build strong internal relationships.
