Laboratory Technologist I

Reporting to the MLT II, Supervisor, or Manager, this position is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, routine and specialized laboratory procedures and preparation of specimens. Performs routine bench duties in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures to ensure a high quality, accurate and timely result. Ensures annual competencies are completed within specified timelines. Provides instruction and collects specimens ensuring sample integrity. Performs all quality control and assurance practices and maintains records as required. Operates, maintains and performs troubleshooting on a variety of laboratory instruments to ensure optimal function. Monitors department supply inventory and acts appropriately to maintain. Participates in the validation and assessment of procedures and equipment under the direction of the senior techs and other leaders. Responds appropriately to non-conforming events and unusual situations. Identifies when to refer more complex issues or problems to the immediate Supervisor. Contributes to operational improvements. Collaborates on the preparation of manuals and SOP. Maintains, cleans, decontaminates and organizes work areas based on LEAN Six Sigma principles and SOPs. Maintains awareness and consistently practices all safety precautions and procedures including WHMIS. Enters information into the Laboratory Information System and tracking system. Files, retrieves and discards specimens/blocks /slides with a high degree of accuracy. Participates in the training and orientation of students and staff and evaluates their progress. When assigned, participates in weekend on call rotation for various sites. Provides coverage at other sites as needed. Performs other related duties.
Description:As a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) I, you will be responsible for the daily processing, testing, results analysis and reporting of diagnostic samples within the laboratory department. You will perform a variety of routine and specialized procedures in the processing of specimens used in diagnosis, treatment and research.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA). Able to work with exposure to chemicals and gloves. Chemicals may include but not limited to formalin, xylene, bleach.
Preferred Qualifications:
Anatomic Pathology experience in a clinical setting within the past 10 years. Experience within the last 2 years preferred. Experience with embedding and microtomy. Experience grossing up to level IV. Experience with performing and assessing special stains. Basic LIS and Microsoft computer skills.
