AHS is looking for Licensed Practical Nurses to help make this initiative a success and are offering a funded educational opportunity to receive your Operating Room Technician certification to enhance your career in Perioperative Nursing. AHS is partnered with Macewan University to provide the Perioperative Nursing Program which consists of 10 weeks of in-class/online theory learning, 60 hours of labs, 420 hours of clinical practicums. This multi-site position provides clinical placements at one or more of the following surgical sites: Sturgeon Community Hospital, Royal Alexandra Hospital, University of Alberta Hospital (inclusive of the Mazankowski Heart Institute and Stollery Children's Hospital). With a Perioperative Nursing Certificate, you will have the knowledge and skills to provide safe, perioperative patient care in accordance with CLPNA, Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) and CSA standards of practice. As an OR Technician, you are monitoring the patient during surgery and coordinating care throughout the perioperative experience. In this role, you will provide a link between the OR and the patient care units and will act as a patient advocate while delivering safe, effective and efficient care in both a scrub and a circulating role. The scope of practice is a continuum ranging from basic to advanced clinical nursing activities using evidence-based measures and outcomes. Upon successful completion of the program and the conclusion of this 6-month temporary position, there will be the opportunity to apply on vacant OR positions within the Edmonton Zone. Note: There are 4 LPN positions available.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Current experience in an acute care setting, including surgical and/or exposure to or experience in an operating room environment. Demonstrate a strong interest in working in a surgical suite (Operating Room) environment. Shows readiness and dedication to engage fully in a structured six-month perioperative education course. Commitment to the Perioperative Specialty area upon completion of the program and orientation period. Willing and able to travel to designated sites, campuses, and clinical practice areas as required. Ability to meet the physical demands of the role while consistently performing in a fast-paced, highly organized clinical environment. Proficiency in collaborating within the expectations of an integrated team. Displayed advanced problem-solving skills integrating critical thinking and good judgment. Demonstrated communication skills promoting respect and team engagement.
