Located in the picturesque Fraser Valley, an hour outside of Vancouver, the City of Abbotsford is the fifth-largest municipality in BC with a population of approximately 166,000. Surrounded by majestic mountains and working fields, Abbotsford offers a rural charm and friendly small-town hospitality within a fast-paced urban cityscape that boasts a flair for trade, commerce, and entertainment. Young families and working professionals continue to relocate to Abbotsford, drawn by the affordable real estate, booming economy, and superior quality of life. Residents have access to extensive civic recreational and entertainment facilities, including indoor and outdoor pools, and a 7000-seat spectator arena which hosts the Abbotsford Canucks AHL hockey team as well as world class concerts, shows and attractions. Abbotsford has excellent recreational facilities and is home to two private and three City-operated arenas, hundreds of parks and playing fields, and an extensive trail system that spans the entire community. Abbotsford’s educational facilities encompass pre-school to post-secondary levels, with full degree programs offered by the University of the Fraser Valley. Elementary and secondary education is provided by both public and privately-operated institutions. The major medical facility is the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre (ARHCC), a state-of-the-art, 300-bed hospital. The ARHCC provides enhanced and specialized health services to more than 330,000 people in the Fraser Valley region. There are also a number of intermediate and extended care facilities as well as a unique Campus of Care tri-fold medical centre that includes the second BC Children’s Hospital. And don’t forget about our fabulous, municipally owned and operated Abbotsford International Airport to connect you with destinations around the world.
The City of Abbotsford has an exciting senior leadership opportunity within our Engineering and Regional Utilities Department as the **Director of Environmental Services**. Reporting to the General Manager of Engineering and Regional Utilities, the Director of Environmental Services is at the forefront of shaping Abbotsford's sustainable future. In this dynamic role, you'll provide strategic leadership and set the course for a wide range of environmental issues, initiatives, policies, and bylaws. You'll be the go-to expert, offering strategic and technical advice to City departments on all things environmental.
Your team will be the driving force behind our sustainability and climate change initiatives, developing a robust corporate climate resilience strategy. You'll oversee the City's solid waste and recycling programs, represent Abbotsford on regional solid waste matters, and manage the source control program for the regional wastewater system. Plus, you'll be our champion for promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship through education.
The Environment Services Division is all about leadership and innovation. We're dedicated to creating integrated sustainability strategies and policies that align with City Council’s Strategic Plan and vision for Abbotsford to be the Hub of the Fraser Valley. We're not just building a city; we're building a community that attracts and retains people to live, work, and play here.
As our Director, you'll be a collaborative leader, strategic thinker, and problem solver with sound judgment. You'll inspire and motivate a diverse team, fostering a high-performance work environment. Your ability to build consensus on challenging issues and develop partnerships will be key. With your hands-on leadership experience, you'll juggle multiple priorities and drive projects forward in a multi-stakeholder environment. Your strong communication and interpersonal skills will help you build credible and trusted relationships at all levels throughout the organization and the community.
The successful incumbent will possess a Degree in Engineering, Planning, Environmental Science, Economics, Natural Resource Management, Biology or other related discipline; a Professional Designation and/or Accreditation in your field of expertise; and ten years of progressive related experience with a minimum of five in a senior leadership role.
At the City of Abbotsford, we work strongly to create a challenging and rewarding environment for our employees to thrive. We offer ongoing personal and professional development opportunities, competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package.
