The Business Manager is the senior administrator in the Biointerfaces Institute and provides operational management of the Institute in support of it's mandate. The Manager provides administrative and operational leadership to the Director, completes visioning, strategic planning, and is a resource to the Institute members, who are from multiple faculties and departments.

The Manager is accountable to the Institute Director. The Manager supports the Director and, at their discretion, may represent the Director in discussions with department Chairs as necessary. In carrying out their responsibilities, the Manager liaises with the senior administrative support staff in a number of departments within the Faculty of Science and occasionally within the Faculty of Engineering. Additionally, this person will be required to communicate and work with other internal and external stakeholders. The Manager will ensure consistency and equity in decision making with respect to the interaction between the strategic plan and operational goals. Key areas of responsibility include: financial management including numerous (sometimes complex) research accounts, establishing and maintaining operational budgets for the Biointerfaces Institute which consists of approximately 10 labs and the personnel, supporting principal investigators with the CFI budget, financial reporting, forecasting, and other required documentation; strategic planning; operations management; inter institutional management; human resources management; physical resource management; research administrative support, and project management.

The Institute Business Manager is involved in all functional aspects of the Institute and is routinely called upon to make critical decisions independently. The Manager is privy to highly confidential information involving the strategic planning for the future development of the Institute, issues concerning faculty and staff, budgets, allocation of resources etc. and works closely with the Director to achieve the goals envisioned for the Institute within the context of the strategic direction of the Faculty of Science and McMaster University.

The Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all financial and human resource structures and activities in the Biointerfaces Institute in accordance with university policies and procedures. Also, the Manager is responsible for identifying and recommending process improvements, revenue enhancements, expense reduction opportunities and developing strategies to maximize the lnstitute's financial resources. Working in collaboration with the Director, as well as with Institute members, heads of large research programs, and individual faculty and staff, it is the responsibility of the Manager to ensure financial, research and human resource management of the Institute, which includes accountability for research grants ($20M CFI grant and Infrastructure Operating Funds) and the six research and administrative staff.
