**Position Summary**
The Surgical Unit manager promotes, facilitates, and manages the unit environment in such a way that patients receive exceptional care. Exceptional care will be evidence based, safe, effective, efficient (well organized) and will provide a positive care experience for patients and families. The unit manager is a key part of the health care team providing leadership in the management of human fiscal resources. The unit manager will foster a cohesive and motivated team and serve as an ambassador for the team(s).
As the unit manager for the Surgical Unit you will be accountable for facilitating clinical excellence, leadership, and management leading to the delivery of patient centered quality acute care. Your leadership demonstrates creativity, innovation, flexibility and professional knowledge suitable to the interdisciplinary environment. Working collaboratively with community providers, you will engage in key activities to promote positive public relations with patients, visitors, staff, physicians and volunteers. **Department/Unit/Program Description**
The 4th floor Surgical Unit is comprised of both medical and surgical patients which have various complexities such as congestive heart failure, diabetes, bowel obstructions to general medicine cases. The surgical cases range from orthopaedics, general surgery, ophthalmology, women’s health and urology.
**Essential Qualifications**
- Current registration with the College of Nurses
- BScN or associated degree
- Minimum five (5) years of nursing experience in an acute care environment with three (3) years of recent management/supervisory experience
- Demonstrated ability to foster both a patient centered culture and patient safety culture
- Demonstrated business acumen and budgetary awareness, with the ability to improve effectiveness and efficiency through the management and utilization of human, financial, and physical resources
- Demonstrates ethical leadership, has the ability to set a strategic direction for the team, including the ability to direct, motivate, evaluate, and recognize staff; commitment towards sharing skills and knowledge with others
- Ability to engage establish and maintain effective working relations with members of the leadership team, physicians and inter-professional team, subordinates, colleagues, staff, and the general public
- Superior ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Proven conflict management abilities and mediation skills
- Effective collaborator and strategic thinker, including the ability to conceptualize, communicate, and implement change management initiatives
- Excellent project/time management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Demonstrated attention to accuracy and detail
- Commitment to inter-professional practice and lifelong learning
- Maintains current knowledge of and ensures compliance with all regulatory and professional standards of care which includes accreditation
- Must be able to fulfill the physical requirements of the jobs, as per the current Physical Demands Analysis
**Preferred Qualifications**
- Master's Degree in Health Administration
- Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO)
**Hours of Work**
Hours of work for the Manager position are 37.5 hours/week, Monday to Friday. As a nursing manager, you will also be scheduled on a Manager on Call rotation that includes nights and weekends.
