WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE?

You will:
Interpret and portray the life, work, and skills of a slack cooper (barrel-maker) and mill hand in an 1860’s rural community.
Assist with the overall set-up, maintenance, operation and research related to the cooperage.
Use a full range of tools and operate the historical machinery within each mill in a safe and competent manner.
Produce and promote saleable products manufactured within the mills and trades unit.
Support Upper Canada Village programming, including the delivery and instruction of experiential programming to children under the age of 18.
Ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the resources of the site, following all health and safety procedures prescribed by Upper Canada Village and the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations.
Embody the SLPC’s equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests.

HOW DO I QUALIFY?

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
You have:
Knowledge of the coopering trades of the 1860’s to act as a heritage trades interpreter.
Knowledge of the place of the mills and trades in the community as well as the social, economic, and political environment to a level typical of a skilled tradesman of the 1860’s.
Knowledge of the immediate historical context of all activities, objects, tools, and implements in the Cooperage and Flour Mill.
Knowledge of the operational care and maintenance of various and unique historical equipment, machines, supplies, and tools and the conservation of artefacts.

CUSTOMER SERVICE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS
You have:
You have excellent oral communication skills to engage guests, deliver information in an entertaining manner with enthusiasm and high energy, and respond effectively to customer questions and concerns.
You have the ability to “read” the customer, understand when they are not connecting, and the flexibility in approach and content to serve visitor needs.

OTHER ESSENTIAL SKILLS
You have:
Fine woodworking skills and the ability to use competently a range of hand tools required as part of the coopering trade.
The concentration and motor skills to perform the work.

Produire et promouvoir des produits vendables fabriqués dans les moulins et les unités des métiers.
Soutenir la programmation d’Upper Canada Village, y compris la prestation et l’enseignement de la programmation pratique aux enfants
